Does this sound like gallstones?

I've been to the doctor and she thinks it an IBS attack but it's not like anything I've ever experienced before.
Move been waking in the night with a screaming pain on moving position from side to back and then this morning from stretching my arms up.
I've read lots about gall bladder pain and most people's attacks last for hours whereas mine was about a minute of shocking agony.
I don't know how on earth you could put up with it for that long!
She prodded my gallbladder and said that because it wasn't painful that's a negative but also said that it was just a snapshot in time so could have a different result at a different time.
I'm so scared of the pain coming back.
I'm going to take her advice and watch my diet, take buscopam etc but I just wondered if anyone else had this presentation of short attacks at night time on changing position?
Would really like some opinions!

I've got ibs and your pain feels exactly like mine when I'm having a flare up.
Keep on top of the buscopan and drink plenty of fluid to help x

That doesn't sound like my gallbladder pain, which was a nagging pain escalating to eyewatering pain on my right side, about where your bra band would be. It does vanish as soon as the gallstone passes, but I don't think it would have been better or worse for raising my arms.

(Credentials: I had gallbladder problems during pregnancy so had many more, and worse, attacks than they would normally allow before being able to have my gallbladder removed.)

My gallbladder colic was different to that. It was like a belt being tightened very tight underneath my bust. The pain was worse than labour, but similar in that it came in waves like contractions. You could feel it building up and then waning, you knew how much it was going to hurt, and absolutely nothing you could do about it. An attack could be anything from a few minutes to a couple of hours.

IBS can come in so many forms. Hope someone comes along that can help and you feel better soon

DH had gallstones, he was in very bad acute pain (it lasted about 3 hrs each time) and it was all over his abdomen.
My friend has gallstone pain that is low level but annoying and grumbles on and on.
It seems it can present in different ways. Could you go back to your GP and ask to be referred for ultrasound? Then you'd know if any stones were there.

WhatASadLittleLifeJayne · 01/11/2024 11:29

Sounds like what my fatty liver feels like.(For some reason have been called for multiple ultrasounds - nothing there but a fatty liver. Mortifying but glad not gallstones!)

mynameiscalypso · 01/11/2024 11:29

That doesn't sound like the usual presentation. My attacks usually followed eating and lasted for an hour+ and I thought I was actually going to die.

Negroany · 01/11/2024 11:31

It doesn't sound like it but I'm amused that your GP thinks they prodded your gall bladder. That seems unlikely!

Thank you so much for all the replies!

It's interesting to hear that this is how IBS is for some people as I've never had this pain before. I thought I'd felt it all - cramps, spasms, dull ache, constipation, diarrhoea, shaking, you name it.

I'm now on buscopan and paracetamol and we'll see what tonight brings 🤞🏻

@Negroany that may have been my interpretation of what she said :)
She got me to breathe out and stuck her fingers under my rib cage. This would be incredibly painful with gallstones apparently

Honestly I turned over in the night and I thought I'd ripped something inside it was so sharp and painful.
But it's just my ibs

@50shadedofmagnolia is that something that happens a lot to you? Is there a trigger?
That's exactly how it felt.

I think that is called Murphy's sign. Pain is, I believe, definitely indicative of an inflamed gallbladder, usually due to stones, but lack of pain cannot be indicative of lack of gallstones. I say this because I was negative when the doctor did this to me but I had enormous gallstones.

That's exactly how it felt.

My triggers are red meat and fruit and veg skins.
It's happened loads of times but buscopan calms it down
