Subclinical hypothyroidism and anaemia

Went to the GP as I thought I am peri, and the nurse did bloods which have come back saying that I have an iron deficiency and TSH levels of 5.6 with T4 of 7.8. I hadn't even considered that it might not be peri menopause, but my symptoms absolutely fit with hypothyroidism. I'm always cold, I've inexplicably put on weight, I've got terrible insomnia, I feel low, my skin is just flaking.

I have a follow up GP appointment next week and I just know that they will want me to wait and repeat the blood tests in a few months, but I just feel so shit now. I'm wondering if it is worth asking to start a low dose of levothyroxine to see if it helps. I really don't want to spend another 2-3 months feeling like this.

I was advised by my GP to go on thyroxine while sub clinical. No point in waiting to go below when you can stop it.

This is me too. A low does of thyroxine has sorted it within 3 months. Still iron deficiency due to heavy periods; I crush my 200g ferrous sulphate and take a third of a pill a day. Only way I can tolerate it. Good luck! The 2 go hand in hand! Thyroid impacts just about everything I think!

Thanks both. I really feel that starting levothyroxine would be better than waiting at this stage.

As an aside, did you lose any weight after starting it? I have never been above 9.5 stone in my life and despite changing nothing I'm now pushing 11 stone!

No, unfortunately not. If I’m being really honest I actually haven’t noticed a HUGE amount of difference because I’m anemic too. And peri. So!! Triple whammy of energy sucking hormonal stuff going on. I might be getting a little bit of libido boost, and a tiny bit of energy boost which will fuel the desire to go on walks etc. I think it’s a long have rather than a sprint tbh

A long game!!! Thanks autocorrect
