Terrified of getting dry socket

Hello. I am four days post lower wisdom tooth extraction. Had a grim few days with pain/ jaw stiffness/ headaches but feeling a bit better today. Absolutely do not like the sound of dry socket so seeking your experiences. Am I out of the woods yet? If you did get it, how many days in were you? Good luck to all facing tooth extractions.

Yeah, I got a dry socket too a couple of days after a wisdom tooth extraction - it was just awful (all my labours were easier).

I think the chances of you getting it five days in are low?

I was also terrified of this 🙈 stuff I read online put the fear of God in me. Everyone says it’s worse than childbirth!!?

If you’re four days out you’re obviously doing it right, I’d just stay on the same path and introduce things back in very very slowly. I was a good 12 days living off Weetabix for breakfast, mash with gravy for dinner, and smoothies and yogurt! I was starving but worth it.

Totally worse than childbirth, and I had a difficult birth!! I've never been in so much pain in my life! Had top and bottom wisdom teeth out one side, and then a few weeks later the other side. Got dry socket both times. Horrendous.

I'm 67 and had to have my wisdom teeth out last year, and I'm terrified of dry socket too. My dentist said to keep the wound packed for as long as possible, I think I went to bed with it in!

Oh god the fear I had after getting an impacted wisdom tooth removed and googling dry socket! I was in such pain from the removal after the anaesthetic wore off, I was terrified.

You'll likely by fine OP, just be really careful to avoid doing anything that might dislodge the clot. Don't eat or drink anything that might cause suction, I think I overdid it on the mash and yoghurt for too long, but better safe than sorry 😂 I think it's different for everyone, my brother had it and it was horrific and my friend had it and it was painful but manageable. Worst case scenario the dentist will pack it and see you as a priority so will be short lived.

Also I was given a syringe to wash it out in time with salted water I think, stay on top of that for ages to stop food getting lodged.

I had it, started around day 3 after extraction I think. Was painful but manageable with regular ibuprofen (paracetamol didn't touch it). I knew there was something not right as I had both of the bottom wisdom teeth extracted, and only one side hurt whereas the other was painless.
I did go to the dentist on day 6 as there started to be a funny taste coming from it and I was worried about infection. He rinsed it out and packed it with a clove dressing and it felt much better, in fact the next day I didn't need any painkillers at all. He also prescribed some antibiotics in case. It's been fine ever since.

It wasn't comfortable having the dry socket, but it wasn't awful, and it was fine as long I kept up the regular ibuprofen.
The dentist did say, do keep up the rinsing with salt water, basically every time you eat anything.

I had a dry socket and it was absolutely horrendous pain..but it was caused by me naively thinking that drinking through a straw after the extraction was a good idea. Dentist had never told me not to. And it was a day just after the extraction so hopefully not something that will happen to you now.

I had dry socket and it was really really sore but it does go!

Astridastro · 29/10/2024 23:27

I’m on day 5 after a nasty extraction with sedation, slit jaw and stitches. One of the stitches has dissolved thankfully another is still there. It’s horrible having bits of thread in your mouth.

I wouldn’t say it’s painful just uncomfortable, my jaw still aches and my gums are still tender. And solid food is being cut up into teeny pieces and chewed at the other side.

BeMintBee · 29/10/2024 23:31

God I hope I never have another tooth extraction I didn’t get pain but was reliably informed by my teens that my breath was rancid 😷 spent half of Xmas day down at a private emergency dentist at quite considerable cost.

This is exactly what happened to me! I used a straw to drink. Big mistake.
