Choking on nothing?

Putting DS to bed and suddenly I had a huge intake of air and then started uncontrollable choking literally nothing. I felt like I couldn't breathe and I was frantically coughing and gasping. I'm fine now but it's really scared me. What the hell was that?!?!

This started happening to me after I had my tonsils out (as an adult).. anything like that?

No I've not had them out of any kind of issues

This used to happen to exH a lot. He never got to the bottom of it but I used to have to whack him hard between the shoulder blades to get him to breathe again. It only happened once when I wasn't around and he slammed himself into a doorframe to start the breathing again.

Could it be reflux. Can really feel like choking!

ProvincialLady24 · 29/10/2024 21:13

Was it as if you'd swallowed air? This happens to me occasionally - it's painful.

sandbeachgalore · 29/10/2024 21:14

Sounds like laryngospasm?

SwedishEdith · 29/10/2024 21:18

Did you inhale saliva?

I dont think so, I was literally putting DS in his cot and it came on suddenly.

Does it feel like your gasping for a second and then comes the aggressive choking and coughing? My throat feels sore and I feel like I'm not getting any breaths now. X

If it is laryngospasm, it's usually caused by reflux (leaning over the cot could cause acid to come up easily). Try not to worry though.

This happens to me occasionally- I normally end up feeling a bit of a fool - tears streaming down my face ! Just thought I was a bit unlucky - not really worried about it

Thanks this is helpful. I think it actually stated when I picked up DS and then it came on suddenly so I just kind of dumped him in his cot, poor wee one.

I'm prone to health anxiety especially when "symptoms" or something happens so I guess I worry more than most x

I had this a few times earlier this year. I actually woke myself up once. It's very scary. I think it was some sort of throat spasm. I haven't had one in a few months now, so maybe gone away.
To get it to subside i think it was breathe out slowly through the mouth.

Sailawaygirl · 29/10/2024 21:30

Silent reflux. I get it every know ams again. Always at the worst time like half way through an important phone call or in a meeting

StarCourt · 29/10/2024 21:58

This happens to me all the time. I regularly choke on nothing.

ProvincialLady24 · 29/10/2024 21:58

@TheBluntCrab

Yes! It feels like a big lump of air and then I choke. And splitter and it's very painful for a while afterwards.
