I have had this since I was about 18 (15 years ago!) It happens frequently when I am ill, like now I have a bit of a cold and sore throat. It wakes me in the night and it is SO ANNOYING

So, I can be minding my own business when suddenly I get this tickly dry feeling in my throat, actually more to the side, like on a tonsil. It gets worse and then saliva starts to run and run and I swallow and swallow, my nose gets runny and my eyes water. Then I cough to try and clear it, and I cannot speak. My larynx just can't produce any sound. So bad.

Have googled it and found people with similar attacks but no doctor has ever been able to identify what it is or treat it successfully..............

anyone? or am I a freak?

btw, my tonsils are q damaged - like full of holes which the doc has said in the past is just scarring from illnesses. only had tonsillitis once.

Not that exactly but I get times when I have a cold where if I need to blow my nose and don't get to do it in time I have a huge coughing/choking fit and either do a huge burp or throw up!

Most odd.

egypt · 25/04/2008 06:51

ooo, pmsl at the burp!

Yes I have had those random attacks since I was a kid, they always strike in the worst possible times too!

kaufalot · 21/12/2020 12:24

@egypt
I am experiencing exactly the same thing and haven't any luck with doctoring. Did you ever figure anything out?

egypt · 21/12/2020 12:47

Gosh this thread is a blast from the past!! I still have them and no idea why 😐

User120987 · 23/03/2021 22:44

I get this!! Literally at the worst possible moments!! And if you don't cough your eyes will stream like you're crying!! I've found the only way to make it go away is to have a drink.

dadoinonus · 30/09/2021 22:20

yes! always happens in the worst moments like in a bus, class, train i’ve found if you drink it goes, but as soon as i stop drinking i feel the tickle again so i’m forced to just kind of keep taking sips out of the bottle until i can leave the public space and clear my throat properly. Happened to me yesterday in the train for the first time and today in class and in the bus, 3 times in my life in the space of 2 days, lol.

Hi, I have the same problem for over 20 years. It gets really worst during cold seasons. In my case it is part of asthma and allergies. Dust mite, pollen, shellfish are some of the reason my asthma triggers (with this symptom). I know how bad it is especially when it happen in the public. My airways will completely close for 2 or 3 seconds if I don’t have time to control it. The only help for me is Ventolin (inhaler for asthma) and kind of quick meditation to relax the throat muscle so it doesn’t shut during the attack. I suggest you speak to your doctors about it.

Sorry I know this is an old thread but this has just happened to me and needed to Google it, then came across this. Also had these episodes for years when ill, I think it has something to do with the mucus lining in the throat clearing away because of the coughing and then there not being enough of it, so your throat is literally dry, making it stick together and kind of 'catching' if that makes sense. That's how it feels for me anyway. It's awful when it happens. Luckily it's never happened to me in public, tends to happen during the night

TabbyCatte · 17/07/2022 22:18

I just found this page from a Google search of this exact thing! I know it’s an old thread but I have this exact thing happen and I was trying to learn more about it. I have covid currently and it’s happening a lot but it happens every time I have a cold, or very occasionally when I don’t

bellac11 · 17/07/2022 22:22

Yes. I was diagnosed with asthma for it, last year I found out I had been misdiagnosed and the pumps and various inhalers over the years had been making it worse

I had SALT for it, its frequently misdiagnosed as asthma, its not.

Mine is partly contributed by post nasal drip but also I have to do exercises for the larynx and also make sure Im hydrated. currently its bad again because of the heat, fans on all the time and air con in the car.

I have had this issue for 7 years. I went to an ENT and no answers. I spoke to my doctor about it recently and he seemed to think it is acid reflux. He told me to take a Pepcid AC in the morning and at night to see if it helps. I didn't really think he was right but tried it anyway. That was three days ago and not one episode since then!! This was happening to me at least 10 times a day and nothing since I started taking the Pepcid AC. I will say that the condition comes and goes - meaning, it will happen for 6 weeks or so then go away for several weeks. I am praying that the Pepcid AC has really worked and it wasn't just a coincidence that the day I started taking it is also the day that the episodes took a break. If anyone else tries this, please let me know if it works for you.

Hi all,

I'm adding to this convo as i have been searching for the same thing that's happening to me!

Got over the flu over month ago, had a tickly cough but usually it goes. This has not.

About 7 times or more a day I have a wave of intense tickle in bottom of my throat, near larynx(voice box). It radiates so much I have to cough, I try not to and succeed at times but mostly I have to cough a few times it has made me feel nauseous. Like others on this thread I drink water to stop it or calm it down it fades away but straight away my nose runs and my eyes water with tears. I must be going through a lot of tissues!

I have no pain, no fever, no lump feeling in throat nothing. Though after coughing my cheeks are hot.

I have slight allergy but only in Spring when trees bloom I do use an inhaler if bad, I thought it maybe the autumn with leafs falling. Or could it be just post nasal drip?

I really hope it goes as it keeps me awake at night too and driving me mad. Luckily it can stop for few hours or when waking up starts few hours after.

If anyone else here or someone new experiencing same thing I'd like to know. I may try this Pepcid AC someone mentioned and like know if it has worked? I'll look it up. I take honey and cough medicine but it justs soothes it not stops it. I also tried antihistamine tablets but not seeming to help.

@julesjas1970 - I get bad coughing fits with allergies and my allergies now seem to be bad in spring and early summer and now again in autumn. I think it’s mould spores at this time of year. We moved house two years ago at this time and my autumn allergies started then so it’s something around me here in a new area. I managed to lose the silver birch tree that was a night mare for me at our old house but swapped it for something new! When we moved two years ago I had really bad coughing fits and it took me a while to figure out it was allergy related.

I find taking Allevia at night and then Beconase in the morning seems to help.

julesjas1970 · 29/11/2022 12:00

Did yours start with an intense tickle as this is how it begins. Then it fades and my nose runs and my eyes well up with tears? Yes I have Spring allergy when trees leafs comes out, but luckily ok in summer. I too have a birch tree in neighbours back garden doesn't help as that's the worst tree, lovely as they are but a pain. I shut my windows when bad. So am wondering is it the trees as there's a massive beech tree too! But I get it shopping mall so maybe it lingers. It's starting get me down be honest so will try what you suggested and others. Hopefully it will gonas quick as it started as never had this before at this time of year.

Hi I've been reading the posts on this thread with great interest as I've suffered on and off for years with the tickly throat, watering eyes and dry cough. This usually happens at the end of a bad cold or chest infection and lasts a couple of weeks, however this time it's been going on for nearly 6 weeks and I'm at the end of my tether. I've managed to arrange a phone call with a GP for tomorrow morning, and wondered if any of you could update this thread with your progress with this issue? The reflux suggestion was interesting as I've heard of that before, did the Pepsid AC help long term?
