Threadworm in child

Also posted in children's health. On Monday evening I found a few threadworms in my sons poo. Got the treatment (Ovex liquid) Tuesday morning and gave him a dose. Wednesday and yesterday we had a few in his poos (they appeared dead). He's done a poo 5his afternoon and there was a LOT of worms in it (2 or 3 moving, but the rest seemed still). But on cleaning him up he's had quite a few come out of his bum and they're all still alive. I've done two checks since his poo an hour or so ago and he's had a few more come out since, all alive. Is this normal? I thought it would've started working by now and any coming out would all be dead 😑

Just another update, he's just done another poo now and there's quite a lot of worms in there, all wiggling about. I really don't know if this is normal or not...

Yes normal, not sure if it's the same with the liquid but with the ovex tablets you usually need 2 doses (can't remember how long between doses.)

It's definitely normal to have live ones still coming out is it? This is the first time my son has had it. It's alarming to say the least 😅 He needs to have another dose of the liquid in 2 weeks as well

Yes it's normal, the medication doesn't kill them, it starves them so they die. It can take a few days to happen. And do remember the 2 week dose as it starves any that might have been eggs when the first dose was taken.

If he's disturbed by them at night pop a layer of vaseline or sudocrem over his anus, it traps them a little. Also antihistamine can help with the itch from their secretions.

Make sure you worm the whole family too!

We're still getting a lot of live ones in poo and coming out of his bum as well. I'm just worried it hasn't worked 😬 We did the vaseline and antihistamine last night so thank for that

We've all been treated. Looks like 3 out of 4 children have them - thankfully the other two a lot milder - we've only seen a few last night. Set a reminder for the 2nd dose in 2 weeks as well.

I think it can take up to 7 days to kill off the fuckers, especially if its an established infestation. Hold fast for now. Keep up with the vaseline and antihistamine at night. Wear pants at night and change for fresh in the morning, wash the bottom in the morning. Cut all nails as far back as you can too. Wash towels, flannels and pants/pj's after use.

If they are still live after 7 days maybe speak with your gp about what to do next. I've seen some people have had to double dose in a matter of days or get stronger meds. They are horrible little buggers. Makes your ass itch just thinking about them.

If you have girls be aware they can and will travel to the vagina and cause irritation there too so they might speak of that area rather than their anus and it can be confused with possible utis or thrush.

Thank you for that. We're on day 5 now. All 4 of my children have them now. 3 of them very very mild with just a few - live one seen on my youngest this morning. My other DS definitely has it a lot worse and we're still seeing live ones in his poo and coming out of his bum. I'm hoping its what you said and it's worked but taking a few extra days for it to kill them. I'll give it til Tuesday as that'll be 7 days and ring the pharmacy / GP. Luckily only have one DD but been using the vaseline and antihistamine on them all at night. Thankfully it doesn't seem to be bothering them, even the one who has it the worse. Fingers crossed they'll start coming out dead now and we start seeing less or even better NONE 🤢

When my dc had them the first time I think I deep dived google enough to actually make myself immune to the horror of it all 🤣

One tip is to keep Ovex in your medicine cabinet from now on so you can treat at first signs without waiting for a pharmacy to open! Same goes for headlice treatment. The joys of parenthood!

I vaguely remember reading that if many are present in poo after treatment, the ovex is working as they are weak and not able to stay attached to the bowel wall, so, silver lining?

RosieFlamingo · 27/10/2024 19:10

Just a thought, try and keep their nails short, it will help stop them re catching them.

NewYearNewMeMamma · 28/10/2024 19:21

Well my DS who has them the worst has just had a poo and still getting live ones in it. Assume it's a good thing they're coming out I'm surprised we're still seeing live ones so makes me think it hasn't worked properly. My other 3 DC haven't passed any today in their poos so think they're probably ok. Think it's best if I call the pharmacy in the morning and see what they say. Also, I've been cutting their nails right down (I generally keep them as short as possible anyway with school but making much of a point at the moment).
