It's relatively straight forward. You will need to have some 'clear-out medicine'. The hospital should send you some info on this though.
It's not as long and involved as a colonoscopy which looks up all the large bowel.

ImightbeLulumama · 24/04/2008 21:11

yes, and a colonoscopy, was fine. no pain, done in the consltant's office did not need a clear out before hand.

ImightbeLulumama · 24/04/2008 21:12

had sigmoidoscopy first, tehn a colonoscopy as a day patient a week or two later

madcol · 24/04/2008 21:31

Whether or not you need clear out depends on the type . If it is rigid - done in clinic often there and then- or flexible - done in an endoscopy unit and booked.

Thanks , not looking forward to it , did they tell you at the time how things looked ?

Dp had a colonoscopy. He said the Picolax (???) he had to clear his system was by far the worst part of the whole experience. Very explosive results iyswim!!! But not terrible and the test itself was uncomfortable at worst. And dp is a big baby as far as pain is concerned.
They did discuss possible causes of his problems but didn't give a diagnosis there and then, he had to wait to see gp a week later when the results came back. I think that depends what they are looking for tbh.

Iworryalot · 25/04/2008 07:25

Thanks , dc thinks i have IBS but is doing this to be 100% i think , i hope .......
hope your dp is ok , i think it is the not knowing that frightens me , and i am a real wimp ......although did have 2 big babies with only gas and air

Iworryalot...My dp would need to be under anaesthetic to have one big baby never mind two!!!!We'd definately be a one child family if he'd had to give birth!!!!
I hope everything goes well for you and it's not as bad as you think it's going to be. Fear of the unknown is pretty normal imo.
Dp is fine now btw...his tests were a couple of years ago now.

Thanks , waiting for appt to come through. didnt realize so many people have bowel problems it seems quite common ,which in a way helps to know your not the only one .

I didn't have to have a clear out for sigmoidoscopy. It was just done there and then. It was a bit uncomfortable but not bad. I was told what they had found but it needed further tests for formal diagnosis.

Had to have yummy picolax for colonoscopy. This was quite uncomfortable for me - I had to have help as the camera went round the bends. You get to watch this one on the tv screen so you absolutely get to see what is going on!

Iworryalot · 25/04/2008 21:48

thanks , hope your alright now ?

I've had a couple of colonoscopies { and loads of sigmoidoscopies which I have always found to be painless and nothing to worry about - my consultant also always gives me the results of these there and then } and have been given a sedative both times. It doesn't knock you out but you are only aware of the first couple of minutes of the test and I usually feel a bit of discomfort, not unlike period pains.
As everyone has said, the worst bit by far are the laxatives which you have to take for a couple of days before the test. On the positive side I found that having my first colonoscopy {mostly likely because of the clearout from the laxatives } gave me a good year afterwards clear of IBS symptoms and my dr said I wasn't the first patient to say the same thing.

Iworryalot · 25/04/2008 22:46

Thanks for that, been feeling very worried bout everything really ,but helps to talk
