I need House! I am a medical mystery! This is what has been happening...

I have been having daily headaches since January and some dizzy spells. Over the last few weeks these have escalated dramatically to me being dizzy and collapsing if I am on my feet for more than 5 - 10 mins. I don't tend to lose consciousness and am fine immediately after I collapse. I feel light headed, sort of swishing at the back of my head and then my legs go from under me. I have had a clear MRI and EEG and while they were doing the EEG they did and ECG they saw two 'episodes' and nothing out of the normal registered with my heart or brainwaves. Oh and I'm NOT stressed!

I have now been referred back to my GP for 'further tests' - what on earth could cause this and what should I ask him to test for (if he doesn't suggest it)! I can't drive and have folk with me all the time, it's driving me crazy. I am a name-changer as this will easily identify me in the close-knit community I live in but I need help! Thanks.

Have they checked your blood pressure? sitting and standing?

Lauriefairycake · 24/04/2008 20:14

I would definitely be thinking blood pressure as a first.

Are you significantly overweight or diabetic. Do you have low blood sugar? Does it make a difference when you eat regularly?

And be careful of saying you're not stressed - you said it's driving you crazy, anticipating your next episode will probably be contributing at the very least

Blood pressure has been checked sitting and standing - no change.
What I mean is I wasn't stressed beforehand although obviously this rude interuption to my life is driving me crazy!
I am a bit overweight but not obese. No idea if I am diabetic, my mum is borderline type 2. Doesn't seem to relate to eating but is definitely worse when I am tired.

Oh and thanks for helping

Kerr - it is a bit like vertigo but I think vertigo is symptom, need to find cause (is that right medical types?)

no change whatsoever? are you taking any medication?

laidbackinengland · 24/04/2008 20:25

My friend's mum had something called Meniere's disease and kept collapsing ? I think she had other symptoms as well though.

Lauriefairycake · 24/04/2008 20:25

definitely worse when tired, hmmmmmmmm.

Get yourself a notebook and write down every time you feel this and what you've eaten.

Blood pressure monitors are cheap and i would be buying one and recording it very often.

In general look for patterns. Also record what you are feeling emotionally before an episode just in case it has any relevance.

I'm thinking low blood pressure or pre-diabetic.

I am not a medical person at all (only a student nurse)

Yarghsvelte · 24/04/2008 20:33

How can I check the diabetes thing? Do they do tests at chemists? I really don't think it is a blood pressure thing as my blood pressure is always perfect (!) everytime they check it .
Definitely not emotional before an episode. Just totally random. I will keep a record of when it happens though, good idea!

urine test early in the morning before food, nurse at doctors can do it for you. To check for sugar in the urine (i think)

Yarghsvelte · 24/04/2008 20:46

Hmmm. Don't expect I'll be popular tomorrow turning up with a jar of wee!

OP posts:
Lauriefairycake · 24/04/2008 20:48

no, just make an appointment and piss when you get there, it doesn't have to be the first wee of the day, just one without food I think

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 24/04/2008 20:52

I was going to say Meniere's as well!

ME? Epstein Barr virus?

I'm guessing if the MRI was clear then it wouldn't be MS?

I'm not really medical enough though so only guesses.

sillysausages · 24/04/2008 21:03

sounds like an inner ear problem like menieres but vestibular neuronitus which does recover with time

slim22 · 24/04/2008 21:07

I'd think diabetes or menieres too

nervousal · 24/04/2008 21:09

I'd think it was odd that you'd have had an MRI without having had routine bloods beforehand? Surely your blood sugars will already have been checked?

pinkbubble · 24/04/2008 21:10

Migranous vertigo, I had something similar a few yrs back, thought I had the beginnings of MS!
I saw a neurologist and after I had had a MRI scan etc, this is what he came up with.

Littlefish · 24/04/2008 21:12

Benign Positional Vertigo? Mine comes and goes.

Yarghsvelte · 24/04/2008 21:21

Pink Bubble - the descriptions of that sound quite similar to my experiences. I wonder my Neurologist would not have suggested it?

If I have had NO ear problems - no ear ache, tinnitus etc could it still be menieres?

Thanks for all these suggestions.

Could it be anything to do with your sinuses? I know it doesnt sound likely, but sinuses can cause dizziness.
