Dd2 has a virus. How long will it last?

She's been ill now for over a week. She's been ill to the point of it being worrying for us for four days.

Took her to doc on Tuesday, who sent us straight to hospital.

Hospital (after several hours) said that she is not dehydrated, she has a virus, take her home.

She is still getting ridiculously high temps, which are (mostly) being kept under control by calpol and ibuprofen. How long is this likely to go on and at what point do we decide that she's not getting better and take her back to the hospital?

Hi Squonk...what other symptoms does she have?

ImightbeLulumama · 24/04/2008 14:52

is she floppy? hard to wake? any rash? is she keeping down water?

if you are worried and she is still needing constant medication to keep her temp down, i would take her back to the quacks.

poor DD , give her a gentle cuddle from me

avenanap · 24/04/2008 14:52

It depends on the type of virus she has and how long it takes for her body to fight it off. It really does vary between person to person. Take her back to the GP if she is still unwell though.

sparklesandnowinefor9months · 24/04/2008 14:53

Squonk i'd just take her back to the doctors or hospital, you yourself as a parent know your child and you need to express that the the doctors and don't back down

Have they given DD any anti-biotics for the virus?

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 24/04/2008 14:53

none really. Just general ill feeling. She was throwing up on Monday, but isn't any more. She's off her food. she's not particularly wanting to drink, but we're making her. She is lying on the settee moaning.

Her temp is ok at the mo, but in between doses of calpol and ibuprofen it's getting to 40 degs,

they said that there is no treatment for a virus and she is better off at home as long as we are managing the temp issue (which we are... just)

She is not floppy. She is just a very poorly little girl.

If she has had a constant temp for a week then your docs really should look into it more for you and at least give her something to clear it up quicker

There are many things going around our village at the moment but i haven't heard of anything thats lasting longer than 48 hrs

Hope she's ok

sparklesandnowinefor9months · 24/04/2008 14:57

i think you should take her to the doc again just for your own peace of mind sqounk

ImightbeLulumama · 24/04/2008 14:57

take her back, lying on the sofa moaning and being ill for a week and no better is not good. might be an underlying infection

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 24/04/2008 14:58

cheers guys, I'll take her tomorrow then.

The hospital didn't give us any advice about what to do, they just said it was ok to take her home (and tbh, we were so relieved to get out of there, that we just said ta-ra as we packed up all our stuff and disappeared)

They said we could take her back if she got worse.

She hasn't got any worse, she just hasn't really got any better.

I hate being fobbed off with the 'oh it's a virus and there's nothing we can do'

I'm with the others...take her back to GP...he was obviously concerned enough in the first place to send you to the hospital

DD2 was like that over the Christmas period. The GP said it was toncilitis (sp) and that it was probably viral but because she'd had sky high temp for a week he prscribed ABs just to be on the safe side.

It may have been coincedence but she started to pick up as soon as she started taking them.

Hope she's feeling better soon

Sending (((((hugs)))) to MiniSquonk

Squonky are you sure you want to wait til tomorrow? Is there any way you can get her seen again today? Do you have appt for tomorrow already? Thankfully she is old enough to be able to tell you if she does start to feel worse. Give her a big kiss from Auntie Egg and her boyfriend Eggboy .

sparklesandnowinefor9months · 24/04/2008 15:58

Squonk i'm with Egg, do you think you could get an appt tonight instead?

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 24/04/2008 18:49

I didn't think I could get there till tomorrow, as dp has the car tonight.

I rang the docs with the intention of asking whether it was ok that she was no better today, I rang them straight after my last post here (14.58) I was told someone would ring me back.

So I waited.

And waited.

And waited.

At 4.30 I rang again and said I wanted a home visit. I was told someone would ring me back.

So I waited.

And waited.

And waited.

So I rang back and asked to speak to the doc we saw on Tuesday, who was with a patient but would ring me back. So I waited.

And waited.

Finally, at 5.20 someone rang and told me to take her in. I was in the process of explaining the car situation when dp walked in, so I took her in.

She has a chest infection. Doc thinks it would have been difficult if not impossible to spot on tuesday. He has given her ABs and said we should see an improvement tomorrow. If she's no better by Saturday, we've to take her to the hospital.

So. Thanks you lot. I may have left it another day if you hadn't ALL said "doctors NOW!"
