Why do I keep seeing little sparkly worms flashing in front of my eyes everytime I move too fast.

It's odd. And a little irritating. Just since this morning.

Is your blood pressure a bit low / high?
Did you sleep with your arm squashing your eyes, lol?

OrmIrian · 24/04/2008 14:35

I don't know and no I don't think so. Have a slight headache now.

Psychomum5 · 24/04/2008 14:37

arghh....go to get it checked NOW.

I have just been to the eye place for me, and found that I have had an ifection that I ignored and I now have permanent damage to my eye, yet if I had gone the day I had vision issues I would have just needed drops and instant cure (well, not instant but YNWIM)

I now need glasses full time. (I have other eye issues too, but the damage is my panic today!!)

Psychomum5 · 24/04/2008 14:38

not wanting to panic you BTW....I am just now in panic mode myself regarding eyes and so.....visions issues??? Get checked!!!

OrmIrian · 24/04/2008 14:39

Eek! My eyes are bad enough as it is ....

Psychomum5 · 24/04/2008 14:40

well....it may be mothin, but going on my eyes today, I would say get checked!

madamez · 24/04/2008 14:41

Go to the opticians. It is quite likely to be a condition called retinal migraine, which is annoying but harmless BUT it could be one or two other things which are less harmless, so go to the optician ASAP.

OrmIrian · 24/04/2008 17:45

Thankyou.

It's stopped for now. But I will keep any eye (ho ho!) on it. Do not need any more problems with my eyes.

If you have a high prescription for short-sightedness (i.e. -8 or more) you should go to A&E/eye hospital and get it checked out. my optician said there's a very small risk of tearing the retinal wall when your prescription is this high and to go straight to the hospital, not to wait for a GP or optician's appointment.

If you're not as bad as me, then you may have just burnt your retinas a little from bright sunlight, will be fine tomorrow. The headache can be pyschosomatic. May as well book in for an eye test just to be sure.

chipmonkey · 24/04/2008 18:08

OrmIrian, don't mean to alarm you but could be a sign of a retinal tear/detachment. If ocular migraine it usually lasts only for 20 minutes or so, not for the whole day. I would go to A and E in your nearest eye hospital.

3littlefrogs · 24/04/2008 18:11

I don't know you, so apologies if this is too personal a question, but are you pregnant? Visual disturbances in pregnancy can be a sign of preeclampsia so would need to be checked out as an emergency.

Headache and visual disturbances i would seek medical advice asap.

OrmIrian · 24/04/2008 18:16

Not pregnant no, 3littlefrogs.

But am beginning to get a little worried now....

southeastastra · 24/04/2008 18:18

i get this quite a bit, usually when i'm tired or get up too quickly!

madamez · 24/04/2008 18:20

Yes, it could be a sign of retinal detachment (I ended up in AE with these symptoms and it was* retinal migraine but that's why you shoudl check it out).

dustystar · 24/04/2008 18:22

I used to get ocular migraines a lot but the longest they ever lasted was just over an hour. I think you should get it checked out.

maviscrewit · 24/04/2008 22:39

Hi there Ormirian. I have this all the time, have been to the dr about it and mentioned it to a neurologist (I was referred when I had a wierd migraine with scary weakness and loss of vision -eek) anyway MRI showed my head is fine but the flashing lights are apparently normal. Funnily enough it first happened when 9 months pregnant with dd1 so there was panic about pre eclampsia but the flashing has remained ever since and my blood pressure is fine. Having read the other posts though I wonder if I should worry? Maybe I should put in an application for a labrador!!

chipmonkey · 25/04/2008 01:42

Sorry, should have said not ALL flashing lights are retinal detachments/tears but the eyes should be checked out, just in case!

2sugars · 25/04/2008 05:49

I get this too occasionally. I'm certain it's a BP thing, since it only happends when I stand up too quickly, coupled with a slight dizzy feeling.

My GPs answer? Don't stand up so quickly!

OrmIrian · 25/04/2008 07:55

Funnily enough I was speaking to my DB last night and he reminded me that he used to get this a lot. Low blood pressure apparently coupled to the fact that he's 6.5" tall.... Like pumping water to the top of a 40 storey towerblock with a water leak at the bottom . Anyway....thanks for all your advice. I seem fine this morning but will be aware if it comes back.

OP posts:
hippipotami · 25/04/2008 09:24

I got this a lot when I was a teenager. It was linked to low bp, and I had a lot of fainting episodes at the same age.
I rapidly grew to be 6ft1, so am sure it is all linked.

After many years of no flashy worms, I 'saw' some a few months back.

hippipotami · 25/04/2008 09:25

argh, meant to finish my sentencte.

Meant to say, wonder if I have low bp again now I have not worked for a few years and the dc are not so stressfull....

monkeybutler · 25/04/2008 09:27

I get them all the time too. I have low BP but attribute it mainly to tiredness as I often see little sctully things in the corners of my eyes. I am fairly tall too at 5'9". I have had them checked out by specialist but he says probably just not enough kip. They were worse when pregnant.

skyatnight · 25/04/2008 09:32

I get disturbed vision occasionally - only about twice a year. I can't see properly when it happens - like looking at a Cubist painting only worse, like the pixels in a picture have become magnified. I have assumed that it is some kind of migraine without the pain and I get it when I have worked too hard, too much coffee, too much computer-gazing. It does usually go after an hour or so. I should get my eyes checked again though as it has been a while.

monkeybutler · 25/04/2008 09:35

Yes Sky that sounds like me too. I get a 'line' of pixels across my vision that takes about half an hour to move all the way across. I have only had it like that when on the pill or pg.

skyatnight · 25/04/2008 10:25

It is weird, isn't it? I got frightened the first time but now I know just to relax and it will go away so I find it quite interesting. It is just bad if you need to drive somewhere or do something urgently.

To the OP, I would definitely get your eyes checked in case it is anything serious.
