2 weeks referral 'suspected urological cancer '

My mum has been having suspected urime infections on and of for a few months, usually frequent need to urinate etc and been giving antibiotics. Issue has always resolved but come back 2 times
She has always has a week bladder for many years , if coughing etc she tends to leak a bit
6 weeks ago same symptoms , but not given antibiotics as already on some for something different, symptoms improved , urine sample sent of to hospital which was all clear
3 weeks ago, visible blood in urine, given antibiotics, urine sent of which obviously showed blood
Urine sent of again week later to hospital which was 'normal ' no presence of blood etc
Has ultrasound which all looked fine, on the bladder apart from 'small kidney stones' and 'small ovaries '
Blood work done which is all fine
Doctors sending her on 2 week path because of reoccurring , CT scan and cystoscopy.
The notes on NHS app say 'suspected urological cancer ' so now I am freaking out
Please can I have some advise , my mum is saying they are doing it as 'precaution' but why does it say 'suspected ' then
I'm so worried , and I tend to get really stressed about things like this

(65 year old , no smoker)

Hi there I went through what mum has just now. Weak bladder v frequent UTI’s some with blood. Referred 2 wk cancer pathway and was extremely concerned and had scan and cystoscope and thankfully all well. However Urology Consultant advised me taking D-Mannose daily for 6 months and vaginal Hrt (very low dose) and my word all urinary issues have been resolved 🙏

Any 2WW will say “suspected xxx cancer”, it is standard wording. They are following the standard referral pathway which is what they are supposed to do. Most will turn out not to be cancer. Best wishes for your mum

There's a kind of checklist. If a patient ticks a certain number of boxes on it it could indicate cancer and GPs are then allowed to fast track to a specialist. The GP may, from experience, not actually think it's cancer but a routine referral would take months and if there is the slightest hint the cancer pathway can speed it all up and rule it in or out very quickly.

I'm 66 and have been referred like this 4 times. One was cancer (breast, 5 years ago). All the others were not cancer. One for lungs, one for bowels and the other for gastric issues.

Your mum will get all the tests quickly. They may well rule out cancer but they won't necessarily give her a diagnosis if it's not cancer.

Hi, I had a cytoscopy last week under a 2 week referral they said at the appointment that they could see no abnormalities. I now have an appointment for an ultrasound to check kidneys etc.

Towel1298x · 22/10/2024 12:41

@Burgerqueenbee thank you for your reply. I hope all goes well for you at your ultrasound

Her ultrasound was all clear on her bladder , just small kidney stones seen on her kidney

I've just been through this for suspected pancreatic cancer, had me in a right state but I'm pleased to say nothing has been found.

Of course I've been googling the hell out of everything and according to the cancer research website 90% of urgent referrals get the all clear. Hopefully your mum will be OK too but the thorough testing will get to the bottom of her issues. (( in my case it's chronic reflux, I do have a family history of pancreatic cancer tho so I can understand why the GP acted. ))

Towel1298x · 22/10/2024 12:45

@Burgerqueenbee sorry can I also ask, were you sent for the cytoscopy for similar symptoms? Thank you

I'm pleased everything was okay for you and nothing to serious!

I am terrible at using doctor google, I know i shouldn't google, but I find myself getting deeper and deeper into the Google hole 🤦‍♀️

@Towel1298x No, completely different situation but I'm 37 so have different risk factors to your mum. No two cases will ever be the same, I hope you get some resolution soon.

Towel1298x · 23/10/2024 07:10

She has managed to get a cancellation appointment today for the cytoscopy. Feel sick I'm so anxious about it 😢

@Towel1298x how did you get on today?

Towel1298x · 23/10/2024 19:53

@GoldieRetrieverLocks it was all okay thankfully!! My mum had the cytoscopy and all looked normal. Still waiting for her CT scan, but they did say it could possibly be the small kidney stones causes the blood in wee as her bladder all looks good
