Wit’s end with sudden IBS-D

I’ve had low-level IBS for years, worst it really got (aside from quite unpredictable bowel habits) was bad wind and bloating. However in the last few months it’s taken a real turn and it’s like I can never poo enough. As soon as I eat anything it triggers another bowel movement (varying from fairly normal to completely liquid). Lost my appetite and food makes me feel slightly sick so my weight is getting very low. It’s like a have a constant low level squeezing pain in my gut. Mornings are usually the worst and I can go to the toilet 5 times by lunchtime which is impacting me hugely in my work as I can’t wfh. I’m genuinely getting behind in my work and constantly have to think up excuses to nip to the loo.
when I have to travel to other sites for work where the toilet situation is unfamiliar, instead of looking forward to a change in routine, night in a hotel etc, I dread it now. I feel like my life is on hold whilst I try to sort it out and it’s giving me anxieties I never had before. I have already had to call in sick/leave work early several times recently due to the amount of time spent in the toilet.

Ive been bothering my GP constantly about this and he has sent off a range of samples, all of which are normal, so he basically isn’t concerned - whilst I’m starting to feel hugely anxious and depressed about the impact of the symptoms. I know there are lots of sufferers out there but has anyone had any joy? I’m considering going private now for a colonoscopy as GP wants to go through all the dietician etc routes first. This has been such a sudden change though I just can’t believe I would suddenly become dramatically intolerant to a food??

I would suggest the FODMAP approach too - I did a fodmap exclusion about a decade ago which has taken me from dreadful IBS to relatively reasonable guts. I was lucky in that I didn’t have to cut much out completely, but there are some foods I’m better off avoiding. Best thing for me is that those foods can be quite useful in helping out if my gut slows down too much. I take daily antihistamines which has had quite a good effect on my digestion, all of this was actually worked out by an allergist who I saw over something else, despite having had years of IBS issues and previous investigations

@Galloplikethehorsejust wondering if anything fixed it for you? My husband is in a similar situation as yours and is really struggling

Galloplikethehorse · 23/05/2025 17:36

@Anonymous08 I totally forgot I had posted here. I forgot to reply to everyone who commented but appreciate each and every one.
I’m so sorry to hear your husband is suffering too. I have good and bad days. Never had a big breakthrough on finding a fix, however if your husband hasn’t tried it I would strongly recommend taking psyllium husks. Honestly the only thing that almost instantly gets me more solid bowel movements! In that sense it’s a bit of a miracle. Happy to give you more details on that if he hasn’t heard of it.
Other than that, I’ve accepted that I have def become more anxious since having a baby a few years ago and it plays a role in my gut symptoms. I would like to explore amitrptaline as suggested above in the thread, but for the moment I do take Imodium whenever I am anxious about my tummy feeling off (and I can’t just stay at home).
best of luck xxx

I have this problem too, also had anal fissure and fistula in the past. Surgery for these damaged my sphincter muscle so when I need the loo I have much reduced control. The consultant recommended Imodium and Fybogel. I take 1 imodium every morning and a sachet of fybogel each evening as standard. If my bowels are over active I take more imodium, I think 5 is the most I’ve taken in a day. I do agree that knowing you will be somewhere you cant easily get to a toilet makes it much worse

Thanks for the response. So sorry it's not completely resolved for you. We will try the psyllium husks..
Did you get a colonoscopy at all? My husband is scheduled one for next week

SloppyThePoodle · 23/05/2025 19:05

I had this a few months ago, it was awful. The flareup triggers anxiety that triggers another flareup, then you're in a vicious cycle. Absolutely horrible!

What worked for me was downloading Nerva and doing the gut directed hypnotherapy course, as well as a few days of buscopan from my GP.

Good luck! ibs is the absolute worst

I was about to ask the OP if she’d tried psyllium husk but noticed she’d reappeared today and recommended it. I’d urge anyone suffering similar to give it a go. It doesn’t completely stop attacks of diarrhoea for me but it makes them much less likely and everything a bit more comfortable.

Desden · 23/05/2025 20:39

I had very similar problems for many years, so I did the York Test.

You just send away a small blood sample they test it to see if any intolerance. If there is you can then get another test to identify which foods you are intolerant to.

Mine came back with quite a few. You have to cut out all these foods for 6 months and then gradually start reintroducing them. It was so much easier and quicker then an elimination diet.

It sorted out all my problems. It was the best money I have ever spent, totally changed my life and now I have no problems whatsoever. Just Google York Test to find out more about it.

Old post I know but can it be the capsules? I’m on day 3 and haven’t noticed any difference yet

Hi , I have suffered with ibs-d for over 30 years. Every test has been inconclusive or negative every treatment , diet or medication hasn’t helped . I’ve been told they think it’s possible I have Audhd which causes inconsistencies in the git which they can’t help. It seems inadvertently I have found a cure at least for me anyway. I started taking mounjaro for weight loss and was terrified as diarrhoea can be a se but so is constipation. The upshot is slowing down the gut has stopped all my ibs-d symptoms I feel like a new woman . It was so effective I have sent emails and messages yellow carded (positively) as I can see this would be an amazing help to so many people. I will happily take this in any form I can for the rest of my life . I wake every morning and have a ‘normal’ bm and every night. I can eat anything so many foods have been off limits that I am thrilled . I know lots of people will think these meds are dangerous but I watch everything I am doing I drink 3-4 litres of water a day I eat protein and fibre and it’s honestly the healthiest I have ever been. Good luck op 🙂
