Bleeding from bottom

Strawbsss · 17/10/2024 21:19

So I want to start by saying, if anyone else asked this, I'd say "don't be stupid, go to the doctors, they've seen it all before"...

But I feel so embarrassed.

I have a face to face GP appointment tomorrow as I've finally had the courage to speak to someone about my rectal bleeding.

I'm not just talking a few spots on the toilet paper, I'm talking toilet bowl filled with blood Blush

I have always blamed it on piles from pushing during childbirth but it's getting much heavier.

My worry is... I'm MORTIFIED.

Has anyone had their bottom checked over before?

How do you 'show' them? Do I bend over? Do I lie on the bed? Blush

Hi OP, well done on making the appointment, I can understand that it can feel embarrassing but I think that is a normal feeling. I have had to be examined for this and had to lie on the couch/bed thing in the room. I can honestly say the doctor put me at ease and kept me informed of what she was doing at each point.

MassiveOvaryaction · 17/10/2024 21:28

Don't drop your kecks until you're asked to Wink

Sorry. Wondered if light humour might help. Yes, have been checked. Had already had phone consultation with GP who got me to complete FIT test. This was positive and I was referred on 2 week (suspected cancer) pathway for colonoscopy. Whilst waiting I had the physical check with GP.

He did basic obs (blood pressure, temp etc) then asked me to lie on the bed after removing lower clothing. I undressed behind the curtain and there was a large paper roll thing that he'd torn some off to cover me. Then he looked and did an internal exam (finger in rectum) - lubricating gel used and gloved hands. Afterward was given privacy to dress again.
I was offered a chaperone btw but didn't feel I needed it.

Well done for making the appointment, hope all goes well Flowers

I'm so relieved you have had the courage to see your GP. For what it's worth, I've had to see my own GP for (thinking of all embarrassing scenarios)..

Dangly/fleshy protruding thing/peeping from my vagina (post partum)
Purple spot on outer labia
IBS / loose stools, early morning diarroeah
Haemorrhoids - so itchy/ siren
Anal fissures - agony
Threadworm - many times - I'm OTT with hand washing so no idea why I contracted them so many times.
Thrush - many times - no partner or ONS for a decade so poss overgrown sugar biotome problem
Genital herpes (thanks to be cheated on by my exH) rarely have outbreaks nowz
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) - the smell is something else.. no idea what caused it as again, no sexual contact for a decade.
Wart/me on bottom cheek. Dr have me the green light that's it's nothing to worry about.
Have also been through halitosis and tonsils stones/the stench is horrendous via your breath (had mine surgically removed), and childbirth x 2, where you are way past caring what happens to your body. Your GP will have seen it all before and then some. Good luck 🤞
....

Honestly, thank you all so much.

I felt embarrassed even posting.

As luck would have it, I've just started my period too, so I don't even know if they'll still want to look 🥴

I've put it off for so long, it's worried me for years but I just can't keep ignoring it.

You've all made me feel better. I'll be a mess with worry in work tomorrow until the appointment.

I think I'll be referred for a colonoscopy etc so I guess this is only the start of it.

I'm only 30 so I am hoping for the best but preparing for the worst xx

Well done!

it took me years too. I would bleed what looked like litres. I didn’t even tell my DH until once it was so bad I felt faint. It was like that scene in the Shining where the blood flows down the corridor.

i was sent for a colonoscopy. Long story short the kind doctor showed me the teeny tiny haemorrhoid I had way way up and showed me him putting the tiny elastic band round it. Problem solved and probably his 10th of the day.

I now occasionally have spotting. But nothing bad and if I did I would go straight to the GP.

I totally get it. Good luck and well done for making that appointment.

Thank you for this.

I feel so stupid, I've probably had the bleeding for 7/8 years but just spots on the tissue.

In the last year it's got to the point of turning the toilet bowl red.

I'll probably be told off tomorrow for not coming earlier Blush

I promise I won't cancel, I just can't stop thinking about it 😩

Honestly like the pp, they do this stuff day in day out. You will feel so much better after you've been and started to get this problem sorted.

gotmychristmasmiracle · 17/10/2024 22:07

As for the period thing, I would imagine they will still do examination. When I go for waxing the lady still does it, just have to put the tampon string inside me too.

They’ll probably have you lie on your side and it will only take a couple of minutes.

I had tons of bleeding like you describe and it was an internal haemorrhoid. I had to have an operation to get rid of it and improve my diet to make sure it didn’t come back.

good luck op - shut your eyes and grit your teeth

Stixk · 18/10/2024 07:30

Good luck 🧡

ButterAsADip · 18/10/2024 07:38

DH went in for this just the other day! I’ve been in for the same before. Although in both our cases, less bleeding than you’re experiencing. So you definitely need to get it done OP, well done for going.
You just lie on your side on the bed and bring your knees up a bit.
They’ll no doubt ask you to bring back a stool sample too.
Think of it as, it feels good to take charge and get answers! The mystery is the scariest bit, in most cases.

LastTimeLosingIt · 18/10/2024 07:39

Yes I have had to do this. They are ultra reassuring if you tell me you are embarrassed. You'll be one of thousands of bottoms they've seen.

I have a fissure. It turns the pan red. Looks like carnage. You have my sympathy

Well done, you have done the difficult part now.

When you are being examined, concentrate on your breathing. Keep your exhale a fraction longer than your inhale and have them both be calm

It will all be over soon enough.

A surprising amount of my friends have been to the gp with this lately. They really will see it all the time but best to get confirmation it's nothing sinister. Good luck!

Icanttakethisanymore · 18/10/2024 14:49

Good luck OP, well done for braving it. It won’t be anything like as bad as you are expecting 😊

CreationNat1on · 18/10/2024 14:55

I was going to ask, if you are due your period, I see that you are.

I get this a day or so before my period, I think my defences are down.

Let us know how you get on.

They will ask you to lie on the coach not bend over Blush gp does this all the time, they check for any obvious signs of where the bleeding comes from but if not they refer you to a consultant that specialises in this.
I had similar symptoms which was a fissure quite high up couldn't be seen by gp and I had an operation to sort it, hopefully nothing too serious for you.
