Decifering blood results!

Hi!

I've received some results onto my NHS app this afternoon, just says abnormal at the top. These are the ones which are out of range apparently -

Haemoglobin est - 118

Haemacrit - 0.36

Mean corpuscular volume - 75

Mean corpuscular haemoglobin - 24.7

Eosinophil - 0.93

All other full bloods are within range, still waiting for ferritin, B12 and Thyroid.

Tests due to being absolutely knackered and hair falling out.

Anything stand out to anyone? I'm thinking anaemic. Fully prepared for GP to say they are all "ok" though - but I'm not! I have a follow up app next week

Nudging by adding my ferritin levels too - 16

You are anemic. Is there a follow up call booked?

familyissues12345 · 16/10/2024 20:57

Yeah, not for another week though, it was booked by the surgery at the same time I booked in bloods.

I feel really rubbish, have done for weeks. I'd like to know what to do, now really! Maybe I'll call if I don't hear anything sooner

You're only mildly anaemic, but your iron levels are through the floor.

familyissues12345 · 16/10/2024 21:44

Is that the Ferritin levels @nocoolnamesleft ?

OP posts:
nocoolnamesleft · 16/10/2024 21:48

Yes, that's the ferritin. But it's also backed up by the mean corpuscular volume being on the low side, which is most commonly seen when the bone marrow is working just fine but doesn't have the raw materials (iron) to make the normal quality of red blood cells.

PixelVixen · 16/10/2024 21:49

Your ferritin needs to be at least 70 for optimal health - nhs will probably say yours is ok you need to take iron supplements, iron bisglyncinate is probably the easiest, take with orange juice and don't have dairy for a couple of hours either side. Most of of the otc meds like spatone don't have enough to get your levels up

familyissues12345 · 16/10/2024 21:56

Brilliant thank you! I love being able to see the results in front of me, but it does leave you wondering what's going on

Other results are now on there, all are fine, B12 looks on the low side at 237. There's a note saying to check if they think I'm anaemic

You need to add the normal ranges for your tests on too OP - they vary between labs so one area's normal is another area’s abnormal.
Remember too that results are sometimes slightly low or high without it meaning anything at all - a retest 3 months later and they can return to normal without you doing anything different.

I had very low ferritin for a time and it did make me feel terrible. It took a while to bring the levels back up.
