My cat has quite badly got my leg

cat01234 · 15/10/2024 16:34

What do I do now?
This is the back of my leg and this calf has venous insufficiency.
Do I need to do anything other than wash it? I'm really freaked out. Had to lock myself in another room and she was trying to get at me. I'm calling the vets tomorrow.
Thanks.

I'd try and get a doctor to see if you need a tetanus boost and sometimes antibiotics if it was a bite or dirty claws

blessedarethequichemakers · 15/10/2024 16:40

I needed antibiotics and a tetanus after a cat bite. Definitely get it looked at. Especially if an outdoor cat.

MrsMitford3 · 15/10/2024 16:42

My poor cat panic bit my DD at a vet appointment-

she needed antibiotics asap-cat bites are awful. I'd get it checked.
Is it a bit or a scratch??

cat01234 · 15/10/2024 16:44

I don't know if it's scratches or bites but it hurts! It's already bruising.

Wash it with cool green tea - just the cheap stuff, no need for lovely leaves. Wash it repeatedly. It's fine.

Freddiefan · 15/10/2024 16:46

Is there a walk in centre near you?

Todaypicard · 15/10/2024 16:47

Cat scratches/bites can be very dangerous. Please see your GP for a check - they may prescribe antibiotics straight away depending on your clinical history and how it looks etc.

Blanketenvy · 15/10/2024 16:49

One of my cats bites a lot unfortunately. You need antibiotics really. I end up needing antibiotics about 50% of the time for a proper bite. You'll know by tomorrow. You might be able to use pharmacy first now to get a script if you are in England.

Please see medical advice - I was in A&E (severe allergic reaction) and the chap next to me had been attacked by a cat and the arm went septic and he had no previous issues. Cat bites are nasty.

Singleandproud · 15/10/2024 16:50

I went to A&E for a cat bite (long bank holiday weekend, we don't have MIU and A&E you get triaged to minor and major before anyone has a go) to see if I needed a tetanus booster or other treatment as it was a small but deep puncture into my hand and got laughed out of there. A colleague got bitten by her cat on two separate occasions, didn't want to go to A&E and ended up as an inpatient for 3 days with sepsis both times.

Ring a GP as your first port of call but do take it seriously if you see any tracking up your leg.

I don’t agree, going on the experience my sister had. The OP should get it checked out and antibiotics etc as prescribed. Better safe than sorry.

MidnightMeltdown · 15/10/2024 16:52

I've had loads of scratches playing with a feisty cat as a child. Just wash it and put some antiseptic cream in it.

Sandybeaches5 · 15/10/2024 16:54

My Dad was bitten by a cat and even though nothing happened immediately, he got sepsis a week later from it.
Luckily he was ok, but the bite also caused some life long damage to his kidneys. As others have said, cat bites can be extremely dangerous.

There's a big difference from scratches to bites though, and the OP isn't sure whether she's been bitten or not.

LibertyCaps · 15/10/2024 17:06

I got a raging infection in my leg after saving a panicking cat from the jaws of a lurcher.

I would take yourself to minor injuries or the GP, cat scratches & bites are no laughing matter.

cat01234 · 15/10/2024 17:08

Just spotted this. I think she may have bitten me.

It's standard practice to have antibiotics after a cat/dog bite. You need to get it seen OP or ring 111 and ask for advice.

maverickfox · 15/10/2024 17:16

Get yourself seen ASAP. I know someone who got sepsis from a cat bite. You need tetanus and antibiotics. Please don’t leave it.

gavisconismyfriend · 15/10/2024 17:32

follow others’ advice re:antibiotics. Meanwhile wash with an antiseptic such as dettol and use an antiseptic cream - sudocrem or similar

MissMoneyFairy · 15/10/2024 17:33

Yep that's teeth marks, seek medical care and keep it clean and covered

Persephonegoddess · 15/10/2024 17:36

High risk of sepsis and infection, please seek gp apt or minor injuries unit for tetanus and antibiotics, don't risk it, my mum was in hospital for five days when she ignored.

Supersimkin7 · 15/10/2024 17:39

Meh, amateur hour is upon us. I have survived half a century of the spirited pet.

OP, be calm for now - wash the scratches (they are shallow & don’t look like bites) and apply savlon or other antiseptic.

GP in two days if it goes yellow and crusty or starts tracking red.

You’d know if you’d been bitten hard enough to need ABs.

MedievalNun · 15/10/2024 17:43

Definitely ring the GP and see if the practice nurse can see you to check for a tetanus booster / antibiotics. Hubs needed both one christmas eve as the local feral 'entire' tom got into the house trying to get to our girls. He had one hell of a deep cut to his hand and narrowly avoided stitches. We were told to always get antibiotics for deep cuts / bites, even for indoor cats.

There are 2 teeth puncture marks, this is bad advice and op has circulation problems too so cannot just leave it for 2 days.

Concretejungle1 · 15/10/2024 17:48

I was bitten and scratched much worse my gp said as long as tetnus up to date then nothing else to do.
my cat then regularly bit me.
i’d keep them clean just to make sure they don’t get infected.
