i bought a bottle of medised today at the chemist and the woman asked me my child's age (he's 3.5) and she said that it's no longer going to be used for children under 2. (she said something about deaths/overdoses). (but the new packaging is still coming out, so bottles with the old packaging are still being sold.)

oh crap. What do we do with under 2's who are well and truly bunged up. I know there's Karvol etc, but a little Medised actually does the job.

PeppermintPatty · 23/04/2008 19:04

Lie to the pharmacist?

Psychomum5 · 23/04/2008 19:06

I saw medised on sale today that still had the old '3mths+' label on it and was quite shocked as I thought it had all been pulled!

to hear tho that they will question you on age is rather tho as it is implying that we as parents have no brains in our heads....

ah well...if you know what you are doing then you can always 'adjust' the truth somewhat

meglet · 23/04/2008 19:07

It does seem open to abuse. Maybe we'll have to trek off to the GP to get it prescribed.

TrinityTheProgressingRhino · 23/04/2008 19:08

the gp i mentioned this to said that I could give it to gecko when I needed to

Furball · 23/04/2008 19:12

just be aware that there are or rather were two sorts of medised. one from 3 months and the other from 2 years with slightly different ingredients. I know this as when ds reached 2 I swapped but it didn't help his cold the same so I reverted back to the from 3 months one.

They may well have pulled the 3 months one altogether, therefor I would not recommend buying ANY Medised if your child is under 2 unless you know it's the From 3 months one.

fiodyl · 23/04/2008 19:15

Just lie and tell them that it is for your 5 year old who is so ill he had to stay at home.

Bloody nanny state, I mean its not as if we are trying to drug our children so we can get a decent nights sleep......

Furball · 23/04/2008 19:18

fiodyl - read my post just before yours. You need to make sure it is the from 3 months one! not the from 2 years So to say 'just say your child is 5, could be even more dangerous than what the government think we are not capable of.

i'd say thats a good idea for under 2's, ask your GP. i've never seen (or bought!) anything but the from 3 months Medised.
but surely GPs can recommended and/or RX something for under children!

I was told this about CalCold as well when I tried to buy some for my 18 month old last week. I couldn't get any so gave her medised last night, not knowing that it also applied to medised. She's still alive this morning

Does anyone know the problem with these meds?

americantrish · 24/04/2008 10:23

i dont know for certain, but i would venture a guess it has to do something with children being given too much and the overdose coming from the paracetamol in medised...(i was going to ask the chemist more about this change, but i didnt want to seem creepy about it!)

OP posts:
beautifulgirls · 24/04/2008 21:49

It's all to do with the fact that several of these medicines contain ingredients that are also in other medicines that might be administered all at the same time. Some parents do not read the ingredients labels and just assume they are safe to use together and can therefore be overdosing their children. Therefore many of these meds are being relabelled and only given to older children when it is considered a bit safer if they are doubled up on by accident. I doubt medised is any more of a problem than it has been so long as that is all that you use.
I am not a doctor or pharmacist mind you, this is just based upon what I have heard. The choice is up to you.

mummyhill · 25/04/2008 10:18

They are doing the same with piriton, It used to be ok from 18months but I was asked how old ds is when I went to get some for his chicken pox. Apparently they won't sell it for use in children under 2 now.

Right story is that there are now no cough reliefs available for under 2s unless they are a basic honey/glycerol syrup.

It is a recent thing so medised and calcold do still say from 3 months but the government are giving them a bit of time to redo the packaging to say from 2years.

They are putting the onus on the pharmacist to ask age and reiterate teh new licensing conditions for these meds.

Te issue isn't the OD of paracetamol it is OD by taking lots of similar but not the same medicines (i.e taking more than one medicine with an anti-histamine).

They have been banned in the US for ages apparently. Could be wrong about that though.

TheApprentice · 27/04/2008 10:01

lol, morethan1, I agree. That stuff is a lifesaver sometimes!

My sil is a pharmacist and she said she would just lie and give the stuff as normal. Obviously you cant do that if its s differnt kind of Medised, just for over twos.

RBH · 27/04/2008 10:08

But Calnight is still ok from 3 months and it contains the same antihistamine. So why is that ok but Medised isn't?

SlightlyMadSweet · 27/04/2008 10:28

Nope calnight is not OK from 3m anymore.

They were banned by the government about 6wks ago. It was actually the core ingrediants that were banned

You won't be able to buy it for an under 2 anymore. The labels will take time to be updated.

RBH · 27/04/2008 10:30

That's interesting cos the Medised website has been updated but Calpol's still says from 3 months.

Bang goes my drunken conspiracy theory of last night about medised being banned as calpol start selling a new range!

SlightlyMadSweet · 27/04/2008 10:30

Actually I was thinking of calcough.

Never heard of calnight.
You till won't be able to use it if it has same core ingreiant. It is the ingrediants that have been banned here

SlightlyMadSweet · 27/04/2008 10:35

calpol night is on the list for over 2s

RBH · 27/04/2008 10:45

Oh well off to the doctors to see what else we can use on the non-sleeping-when-she-has a-cold snotmonkey!
