I just caught DD (18 months) in the eye. It started bleeding and she was crying. She has now stopped crying and has her eye open but when I laid her down to look at it it's bleeding still in the corner. God all I can think about is if I have made her blind. She is ok and playing now.

Gosh what a shock! Call NHS direct or take her to A&E best never to mess around with eyes imo. Hope shes ok

Psychomum5 · 23/04/2008 18:17

oooh.....do you have an eye hospital nearby??

I would say ring them and see what they say.

my DS2 poked DD3 in the eys once, a few years ago now, and we had to take her to the eye A&E....they put drops in and saw a scratch which she needed antibiotics for. no lasting damaging at all.

good luck, but tis easily fixed and no reason to feel bad about it!

A&E is half hour away so is the walk in clinic. I have bathed her and she is now ready for bed. The eye is ok, just a tad redbut I think she can still see out of it!

God I feel like such a bad mum. I feel awful. DH works abroard all week so have no one to turn to and no one to help me make decisions.

oh don;t feel bad...we all do things to our children by accident...which is what this is.....an accident.

id she is still sore tomorrow tho I suggest getting it checked..if nothing else to put your mind at rest.

Hi, first of all don't feel bad, we all do things by accident to our dcs!

Just see how it is in the morning, if you think it is worse at all or have any doubts, go to your gp. My 23mth ds2 had an eye infection a couple of weeks ago (puffy swollen eyelid, no weeping, tiny bit of redness) and I thought it would get better if I bathed it. The gp I saw the next day (because it was no better) said that any eye infection definitely needs treatment because can become serious if left untreated. He used to work in an eye clinic so knew what he was talking about. I'm not suggesting that this will turn into an infection and not wanting to scare you at all - it sounds like she is on the mend but I just wanted to pass on the info. (My ds's infection just happened because he possibly rubbed something into it so easily done).

Hi. Thanks for all your advice.

After I put her to bed i couldn't relax and phoned NHS direct and they told me to take her to A&E.

Just got home from A&E and she has a big scratch on her eye. I have drops to put in it. At least I can relax now!

Still feel bad but thanks everyone!

Thought i'd check in to see what had happened. Don't feel bad! Honestly, i think the worst, worst thing i did was hit dd in the eye with the end of a mop i felt awful and she had a black eye for days. She'd been sick on the bathroom floor and i was mopping it with discinfectant when she suddenly materilized right behind my elbow.
I Still feel terrible about that one, but she's fine as i'm sure your dd is

daisym · 24/04/2008 08:47

I was out walking with my dd last week and somehow, not quite sure how it happened, she fell flat on her face on the pavement. The sound of her head hitting the concrete made my stomach sink, felt terrified. She had massive bruise on her head, all swollen and I felt like the worst mother in the world. So know how you feel. I think comments from her grandparents about her head didnt help either....

Hope her eye heals up really quickly, I'm sure it will. Its amazing the healing power of children

warmsummersday · 24/04/2008 20:05

Hi. Well this orning it was quite sore and red but have given the drops 4 time today and tonight it's looking much clearer. I looked at her asleep in the car today ad cried because I felt so bad. I have been extra nice to her today!!! Thanks for all your help though.

am so glad she is healing.

stop feeling guilty (I know you still will tho, we mums are injected with the guilt gene as we give birth), it happens to the best of us!

truly......

You did the right thing by trusting your instincts. Please don't feel guilty, we ALL do things by accident as I said. In our (often) rush to leave the house when late-ish for nursery etc I have caught ds1 on his chin/neck by zipping up his coat with too much speed (he is 3.8). I never learn .

Really glad your dd is on the mend.

PS there will always be something to feel guilty over so let this one go
