It's not so good. But not so bad.

Is it a root canal?

avenanap · 23/04/2008 14:14

They drill a hole into the tooth and clean the root out. It doesn't hurt. They do it if the tooth is badly infected. It's expensive though and they often have to put a crown on the top so you'll have to go back.

CarGirl · 23/04/2008 14:17

Presumably they are doing it because you are in pain, otherwise why are they suggesting it???

2 of my root filled teeth only lasted 10 years before they needed crowing, my pre molar must have been root filled for at least 15 years and still going strong!

Anything is preferably to the torture of dying nerves IMO

I had it on a cracked tooth which was sensitive but no more problematic than that. Had it done because dentist said I could get an absess in future which would be horrible.

Had it done on the NHS and had a crown. Not particularly painful - just annoying and uncomfortable and boring (mine took 9 visits but that's another story )

CaptainKarvol · 23/04/2008 14:23

it's the infection that hurts, not the treatment. I had a front bottom tooth root filled by a general dentist (filling failed) and again by a specialist endodontal man. Recommend going to a specialist if possible - mine did a fantastic job, and has the equipment to make sure all the infection is properly cleared (did cost £ though)

If you need root treatemnt it isn't that painful as the area to be drilled is already dead tissue. Basically they drill down ot clear out the infection and dead nerve then fill. It is uncomfortable and time consuming since it may well take more than one longish appointment as sometimes they like to pack the cavity with ab's to destroy any reisdual infection before putting a permannent filling on .

oh god.Sounds crap. Its my front tooth. Have an abcess which showed an infection when x rayed. I have an hour appointment. He said he is going to drill a hole in back of tooth. This all sounds hellish to me. I may need sedated. I am in no pain at the minute with the tooth although it has caused probs in the past

Ah mine was bottom front and they drilled from back. tbh they are difficult to get right and I ended up seeing a specialist like CaptainKarvol as it didn't settle after the first time and there can be invisible roots too. Saved the tooth thus far though if a bit discoloured.

CarGirl · 23/04/2008 15:44

I had my 2 of my front tooth done when I was 14, honest it's fine and it should stop the pain ever coming back.

I have on occasion begged to have some of my sensitive teeth however my sensible dentist refuses as the longer you keep the nerve and subsequently the tooth (even without the nerve) the better.
