DVT - what to expect?

MissAtomicBomb1 · 08/10/2024 22:08

I'm being admitted to hospital tomorrow with suspected DVT in my calf. I've already had some blood thinning medication tonight.
I'm expecting a blood test and a scan tomorrow but assuming it is DVT what happens next?
Will I have to stay in? Can I go straight back to work? Just wondered if anyone has any experience please?

They're really serious OP, no way I'd be going straight back to work. They probably will want to be happy it's gone before letting you out.

Hope you're on the mend soon.

Wait to see if it is first - I scan for these as part of my work, and the scans are often negative, as the signs and symptoms can occur with other conditions. If it is positive, your own medical team will keep you right about what happens next. It'll differ between areas and hospitals, and depend a lot on you personally, so none of us can guess what they'll do. Got my fingers crossed that everything's ok x

If there is a clot it wouldn’t be gone before discharge - it takes weeks for a clot to be absorbed.

Thanks both. Hoping it's not. My lower leg has swollen up out of the blue over the last 24 hours. One calf is measuring 4cm bigger than the other. Also says on my notes there's pitting oedema?! Leg is achey but not massively painful.
Hoping it's nothing but not sure what else it could be!

If it is a clot what do you have to do while waiting? Hopefully not stay in hospital?

There’s a really useful Facebook page you could join. I’m on there as I’ve recently had a pulmonary embolism. It’s a helpful, supportive group.

Pulmonary Embolism & DVT Awareness U.K.

Thank you, I'll take a look. Hope you're on the mend x

It could be water retention or cellulitis. Do you have Venus insufficiency or anything that could have caused this?

Butterflysunshine01 · 08/10/2024 22:44

I’ve got four clots in my lower leg, happened six weeks after childbirth. They don’t make you stay in hospital, I had to self administer injections daily for three months , into the fat layer of my stomach- the drug was called clexane. The pain went very soon after starting the injections. They don’t rescan after three months as they say the clot can still be there- the drug just stops new clots forming and the original clot moving. The body has to work at dissolving the clot by itself. It is worrying!!! But i try to stay relaxed about it, there are things you have to look out for afterwards but they let you know in detail.

Seems to have gone down overnight. Not sure if that's the blood thinners or gravity but hoping it's a good sign.

Everywhere does things differently, and your individual clinical presentation is unique; afraid no-one here can tell you exactly what will happen. FX everything ok

I wouldn't know. My kid died from her DVT. They'll always be super serious to me I think.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 09/10/2024 12:52

@gamerchick I'm so sorry 😔
It's quite shocking to see how common they seem to be.
My blood test and scan were negative so fortunately they've ruled out DVT.
My leg is still slightly swollen but not as much as last night. It remains a bit of a mystery

Still good news though. I'm really glad it's not that OP. It's good you got checked out.

Feel better soon.

WinterMorn · 01/11/2024 19:47

What happened OP? Hope all is well!

MissAtomicBomb1 · 02/11/2024 10:24

Thank you @WinterMorn
I had a scan and blood test which were all clear.
It's been diagnosed as tendonitis, so thankfully nothing too sinister. I'm waiting for physio at the moment.
