DS has hurt his knee. Does anybody know about knees?

He's 10. He was playing on the trampoline with his mate and they got into a tangle. He says it sort of bent back. This was about 6pm. It's not looking bruised or broken, and he can put weight on it, but can't straighten it fully without pain. Does it sound like anything ligament-y that needs to be looked at or just like a bash that needs time to settle?

Does it hurt when he's not using it?

How bad is the pain when he straightens it? Where is it, in theknee?

I'd maxdose him on iboprofen, to reduce inflammation, and see if it's better in a day or two - if not, off to the GP or a physio, I think.

(Ligament things can fix themselves - if he'd torn a ligament, significantly, I think he'd be much worse off.)

Thanks (sorry for the late reply, I didn't turn on the PC yesterday - now that's not something I say very often)

He seems better this morning, although I was still worried last night and had decided to get it seen today if it was still the same. But he walked fairly normally this morning, straighter and with just a slight limp.

It's not been hurting when he wasn't using it, just when he straightened it fully. When he straightens it, it hurts above and to the inside of his knee - he says it feels like it clicks.

Anyway, hopefully he's on the mend - I'm never sure if things other than obvious broken bones need looking at.

Thanks again for your reply

Are you sure he hasn't dislocated his patella (kneecap). Could you try watching his knee when he bends and straightens it to see of you can see the patella moving across. It usually takes a lot of force to dislocate it, but the clicking and pain on one side makes me think you should probably check. If you are still worried, I would take him to see a doctor.

Would it be obvious? I ask because I've tried to looking to see if there are differences on either side, and also have put my hand over his kneecap to feel if there was any difference between the two sides, and it seemed OK. I'll have another look when he gets home.

If you can't see or feel any abnormal movement whrn he bends and straightens it I'm sure it is OK.

fruittea · 24/04/2008 10:02

OK thanks. But I will have another look later on, and will take him to the GP if he continues to complain about clicking. Thanks.

Yeah, the clicking sounds weird, I'd see a GP about that.
