Treatment for worms - can I get it over the counter or do I need a prescription?

DD1 says her bottom itched last night so tonight I'm going to go and check out her bottom when she's asleep. I'm told that if she has worms then it'll be obvious and I'll most probably see the little blighters. I'm desperately hoping that it isn't the case but if she does have worms, do I have to go and get prescriptions for us all or will the chemist be able to sort me out without one?

TIA

You can get it over-the-counter, but it's expensive; get it on prescription and it's free!

Tis called Ovex by the way. About £7 per bottle without prescription.

maidamess · 22/04/2008 20:14

Get the medicine, not the 'family pack' of tablets which only contain 4.

Snowstorm · 22/04/2008 20:16

Okay - thank you very much!

Good luck tonight, Snowstorm - I've never seen any on dd at night, when she's been itchy, but I did once see some in the toilet bowl. I tend to treat on suspicion these days

SlartyBartFast · 22/04/2008 22:17

i think it was 6.00 for a bottle for the family from sainsburys, seems cheap to me,

seb1 · 22/04/2008 22:24

If you live in Scotland and don't pay for your presrciptions i.e children you can get it free from the pharmacy under this Minor Ailment

SlartyBartFast · 22/04/2008 22:27

more reason to feel this about those living in scotland

Snowstorm · 23/04/2008 11:38

Had a good look (eek, poor DD1 ... even though she was fast asleep and didn't know anything about it) but couldn't see anything at all. She sometimes gets thrush in front and back bottom (as we call it, chez Snowstorm) so I'm going to hope it was that but will keep an eye on things, as it were.

Elibean - how on earth did you see some of the worms in the loo bowl, aren't they supposed to be teeny tiny?

Should I be checking her poo ....

ProfessorGrammaticus · 23/04/2008 11:43

Yes you have to check the poo!!

Snowstorm · 23/04/2008 11:48

Oh god ... oh okay ... I can do this, I CAN do this ... think of DD1 Snowstorm ...

Do you have to hoik the poo out of the loo to check it over ... am not sure of the logistics of this ...

OP posts:
ProfessorGrammaticus · 23/04/2008 11:52

Start by just having a good peer down the loo. If there are worms, you should see them if you check a few times. Don't think you have to get it out

fwiw I have always seen them on dd's bottom and never in her faeces..believe me I've looked!!!Usually at night though ...might be worth looking when she's in bed tonight

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 23/04/2008 14:15

thready, that's excellent.

Can a picture be quote of the week?

SlartyBartFast · 23/04/2008 14:45

i only ever saw once in potty.
now just tend to treat whenever anyone mentions itchy bottom.
hope that's ok though.
