Bowel Seems to have Shut Down

Just looking some advice,
My bowels have always been quite erratic ranging from constipation to diarrhoea/urgency and vice versa.
I am currently experiencing a period of no real bowel movements. Last Saturday I had taken dulcolax as I hadn't had a movement in a few days with no urge, I thought it was due to my period but as I have a history of sudden constipation (my record was 17 days!) I wanted to act.
Since the effect of the dulcolax on Sunday my bowel seemed to have stopped working, wasn't having any urges etc so I decided to take Laxido which had been prescribed to me.
I took 2 laxido on Thursday, 4 on Friday along with 2 senakot and 6 yesterday along with another 2 senakot and 4 laxido again this morning.
Yesterday I started having slight movements but they were very small and not properly formed.
Today my stomach is so bloated and uncomfortable, I keep feeling slight urges to go to the toilet but again it's just tiny bits and wind. I have stopped any laxatives now and I'm going to call the GP tomorrow. But I'm starting to get really concerned as to why the laxido hasn't worked. Does anyone have any advice??

Highest dose of laxido, it will be the only thing to work. I was the same and no amount of prune juice, sena or anything else would help. I would go around every 10 days, it was hell. Glycerin suppositories wouldn't help as nothing was far down enough.
Laxido works by drawing extra liquid into the bowel helping the impaction, unlike laxatives that do the work of the bowel.

Fwiw, I was eventually diagnosed with ulcerative colitis after a flare up, it's unusual to present with constipation but not unheard of.

I've tried everything in the book to keep me regular, magnesium is working at the moment. I take one before bed and usually go every/every other day. Hope you feel better soon op.

Could I ask What type of magnesium you take? I’m in the same boat, I think I have chronic slow transit.

Called the drs again this morning as I feel like I take laxatives like dulcolax to clear everything out after not going for a while then I just end up back at square one.
Drs weren't much help, they just told me to take laxido everyday and to increase the dose for a while incase there's a blockage but I told her that I definitely emptied out last week with the dulcolax and she said to continue to the laxido daily but if I need anything else to take it.
Said it might be endometriosis and to keep an eye on it for the next couple of months.
I'm starting to get really really worried now tho, surely I can't be reliant on dulcolax to poo??

What's your diet like?
Are you taking the laxido daily?
I don't have the answer but I do have similar problems. I get medication induced constipation and I have a long and twisty colon. I used to use lactulose which worked well but the gas was awful. I then managed with diet- lots of prune juice and fibre but yet another drug was added and it gradually got worse.
I was doing quite well on dulcoease which is a gentle softner but not a stimulent. Went to GP and they gave me laxido. She said work out how much you need, daily at first then maybe twice a week.
So far it's not really doing the trick. Lack of urge is a problem until I get very bad then I get a permanent urge but can't go.

CherryBerry99 · 16/10/2024 12:18

@Poffy yes lack of urge is a huge issue! I think can't force it from nothing hence why I'm only going with dulcolax.
I'm going heading over to Boots shortly and will try some prune juice. I'd rather have a natural remedy as I really don't want to be relying on laxatives.
Overall diet is okay, I have a good amount of veg and plenty of fluids/exercise. Not so good on the fruit tho.

This isn't meant to be clinical advice by any means, but something that I find supportive when my bowel is sluggish and indecisive is pure aloe vera juice (not the aloe vera juice 'drink'... the pure stuff from Holland and Barrett or off Amazon). I am so used to it that I drink it neat (a small glass a day). I like the taste, which is a bit tart and crisp. But you can mix it with still water. I just find it really soothing and it gets things moving again... oils up the ol' machinery!

You really need a referral to a gastro to sort out what is going on. Sometimes the gut is so compromised you do need laxatives and stool softeners every day. Is it possible to get an Xray to see if the impaction has actually passed?

CherryBerry99 · 16/10/2024 12:55

@Tradersinsnow think the only way to get an x ray would be to go to A&E which I'm really reluctant to do. I'm fairly confident that if I was impacted it passed as TMI but when I went on Friday after the dulcolax, it was a solid and formed motion and then got progressively softer with each movement.
The GP wasn't very good tbh, she told me to call back in a couple of weeks if things don't settle but so far no mention of gastro referral. Plus the waiting lists are so long here I suspect I'd be waiting a couple of years at least.
I'm not overly concerned as I have had episodes like this in the past, I once went 17 days with nothing. Usually the dulcolax solves it but I don't know.

@SerenityNowInsanityLater I've ordered som aloe vera juice. Can't do any harm or taste worse than prune juice!

CherryBerry99 · 16/10/2024 15:37

I've had movement without dulcolax for the first time in 3 weeks!! In fairness I'd still taken laxido and sodium picosulphate but I'm trying to see it as a step in the right direction. It wasn't a complete movement, kind of loose bits but not type 7. Sorry for the tmi lol 🙈

That's a nuisance about the xray. Here GPs routinely order them.

Good luck with it all.

CherryBerry99 · 27/10/2024 08:55

Went to GP again last Monday as things still weren't progressing, the only way I was having bowel movements was with dulcolax which then meant my whole day was stuck in the house.
They felt my stomach etc and couldn't feel any evidence of impaction, they referred me for a colonoscopy. But ever since last Wednesday my bowels have been working again!! It's so weird and I don't know what changed.
I'm obviously still going to go for the colonoscopy when the appointment comes as I've had a few reoccurring episodes of this and need to see if it's anything underlying
