Any hearing experts out there? 5 year old DD had hearing test today, she did well but there was a lot of congestion shown on a pressure test but this hadn't affected her hearing today. Although I am still concerned as her teacher actually flagged this up and says she definitely doesn't hear some stuff in the classroom ( mainly when there is background noise - and its not to do with being naughty ) - and i have had my suspicions fos a while. I have been told to go back in 6 months. Is this acceptable? I am worried there may be some other problem. She often asks us a question which we answer, and she keeps repeating the question as if she hasn't heard us. But she could hear everything during the test today. Anyone got any wisdom they can share? Are there any more detailed tests you can have done or is this one sufficient? Help! She really does get very frustrated sometimes bless her.

it sounds like she has a bit of glue ear, did they mention that possibility today?

It's good that she did well in her hearing test, anyway - what kind of test was it? Did she wear headphones and put little men in a boat / bricks in a box or something like that?
Those are very exact usually so if she passed that test you can feel pretty confident that her hearing is ok.
Did they do a test where they held something against the skin behind her ear, rather than just through headphones? That tests the inner ear, it's a good test because it gives a good indication of the cause of any hearing problems and also whether middle ear and inner ear are both fine.

It is pretty standard to ask you to come back after 6 months - glue ear usually sorts itself out over the summer.

IME it is very, very obvious during a hearing test whether the child has a hearing loss or not, so if the test was fine I wouldn't stress too much...

Yes, bricks in a box with headphones - not the skin behind the ear one. When the GP referred her he suggested glue ear but they didn't mention this today. Thanks.

I think 6 months is fairly common round our way. Geekgirl has it spot on, glue ear is usually worse over the winter and will definitely be worse if your dd has a cold. Ask the teacher to make sure she sits at the front of the class when it seems to be a problem, unfortunately glue levels and the affect they have can vary greatly.
