Have found a hard lump in my wrist - the bit where you'd feel your pulse - what could it be?

Doesnt hurt to touch - discovered it a week or so ago because it was aching.

What could it be and is it worth bothering the docs with?

Could it be a goiter (sp?) Don't they appear as lumps in wrists?

thisisyesterday · 21/04/2008 22:49

ganglion? is a fatty build up I think

RosaLuxembourg · 21/04/2008 22:50

It could be a ganglion which is harmless, but it is worth getting it checked out by a doctor just to be sure.

Tommy · 21/04/2008 22:50

is it a ganglion? My mum used to get them. Not sure hwat they are - you could google it

CeilingCat · 21/04/2008 22:51

Has anyone suggested a ganglion yet?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 21/04/2008 22:51

goitre? SIL had one of those around her throat!

Ganglion - yes - hadnt thought of that, although I thought they hung out with tendons rather than over veins/arteries?

Our English teacher used to have one of those (ganglion) and every now and then she'd just whack it with a great big book! Claimed it went away for a while.

Anyway, sounds like it's a ganglion.

Beauregard · 21/04/2008 22:51

Ganglion

Shitemum · 21/04/2008 22:51

I had a huge one on the back of my wrist, when i bent my hand down it stuck out. I think it grew as the result of an injury and i had it for a few years. Then it just disappeared!

a violin-playing friend had one too, so injury or strain could have caused it maybe...

PortAndLemon · 21/04/2008 22:52

Probably a ganglion (which I suspect is what maidamess means, too -- a goitre is related to the thyroid gland so is in the neck).

They can be treated if they are causing pain or restricting movement, but often come back so doctors tend to recommend leaving them alone if not.

Worth checking with the GP to see if that is what it is, though.

PortAndLemon · 21/04/2008 22:53

Blimey, we all typed at once...

TsarChasm · 21/04/2008 22:53

I had a ganglion on once on my wrist. The doctor squeezed it really hard and it disappeared. Apparantly people used to wallop them with a big bible .

friend has lots of ganglions...when he was a kid he went to the docs, doctor said look the other way, and whacked it with a book, cue no ganglion. it did evemntually come back though

nancy75 · 21/04/2008 22:55

def not goitre, its caused by thyroid on your throat!

TsarChasm · 21/04/2008 22:55

Yes don't squeeze anything in your neck really hard or hit it with a book .

VeniVidiVickiQV · 21/04/2008 23:05

LOL at you lot

I had a bursar/bursur? on my knee that used to pop if I fell over onto my knees, or bumped it by accident. In fact, I went to get it drained at hospital and that morning bumped it on the dining table and it went by itself

I definitely wont be doing any bible-bashing, dont worry

It's really quite hard, so I think ganglion is probably likely (think I was being a bit paranoid because my mum had an aneurism in that area and anuerism exist in family history but I'm being daft now I realise ).

Also, wiki says "Ganglia are especially common in people who perform repetitive or strenuous activity with the wrist, including weight lifters, gymnasts, waiters, tennis and golf players, and musicians like guitarists. Double bass players, especially, are at risk of developing ganglion cysts after extensive use of the German bow." That definitely isnt me

Ooh can I join the club too was going to suggest ganglion. DH gets one in his wrist a lot, dr did suggest hitting it with something but it clears up on it's own when it appears.

susiecutiebananas · 21/04/2008 23:11

I had one on the back of my hand, which would move up and down, as I flexed my wrist. Very amusing when at school. I had it removed as it was between 2 tendons and getting bigger. Started interfering with my grip. have you GP look at it. just in case its something else, vascular. You can get malformations and bulges a little like varicose veins, or and this is really unlikely, an anuerism.

Put your mind at rest and get you GP to have a prod Good luck

RosaLuxembourg · 21/04/2008 23:12

Bursa, I think.

susiecutiebananas · 21/04/2008 23:12

I'm sorry, I didn't read your last post VV. erm, so there is a history of Anurism, maybe would be worth getting it prodded by a professional prodder... Although, you say it is hard/solid, so really is most likely a ganglion.
