Amlodipine

Has anyone had side effects from amlodipine? I had my dose increased a few weeks ago. Now I’m suffering with a very dry mouth and I have this need to clench my teeth all the time! I thought it was my antipsychotic and came off it but that didn’t end well 😂 I’m back on that and then realised these side effects coincided with the increase in amlodipine. Interested if anyone has experienced similar.

God awful stuff. It brought down my blood pressure really well but my ankles swelled up to elephant size.

Garlictest · 29/09/2024 20:21

I hated it, too. Among other things, it made me dizzy and my eyes kept going funny. Swollen ankles here, as well - but it was summer so I couldn't be sure they wouldn't have gone full cankle anyway 😏

I'm trying more sardines and HRT. Blood pressure's still a bit high, but at least it hasn't gone up.

TERRIBLE swollen ankles - so painful! I’ve switched now and feel much better!

Dreamsofcruise · 29/09/2024 20:36

I’m on it and have had no problems in fact its also stopped my lifelong headache and migraine problems too.
Jaw clenching is a common side effect of lots of mental health medication however and also a symptom of stress / anxiety so maybe its more likely related to something like that?

As soon as my dose increased my legs were swollen and so sore, the doc changed my drugs to something different and said that most people can't tolerate a higher dose. Legs took a few weeks to go back to normal.

I guess they try that first as it's cheaper ??

Thanks everyone. My legs are fine just this incessant teeth clenching. I don’t think it’s my MH meds as I e been on them for some time.

I couldn't tolerate it either. It's the first choice NICE approved for anyone over 50 I think. If you are younger, it's usually Ramipril.

DH also prescribed at the same time (!), has no symptoms, but I had hot flushes, anxiety, sleeplessness, swollen bright red feet. I just felt really very "odd". I was already on HRT and it felt as though all the symptoms came rushing back. Not good.

I'm now on Losarten. Zero side effects.

Birdseyetrifle · 29/09/2024 21:11

You can drop back down to 5mg or switch to another CCB like lacidipine or lercanidipine which are better tolerated.

Elphame · 30/09/2024 09:35

Amlodipine gave me swollen ankles and the most terrible dreams.

I was switched to lercanidipine which is a newer version. I tolerate this slightly better but it still gives me unpleasant side effects.

Furball · 30/09/2024 09:38

Amlodipine gave me swollen gums, not that I noticed, but my dentist pointed it out. I had the drug changed to a different one and they've calmed back down.

Rampiril first around here (mid 50s)

Positivenancy · 30/09/2024 09:49

I was put on it at the grand old age of 38, had no side effects at all…but it didn’t work completely so I now take rampiril too. I hate that I have to take them. I’m young, 5”2 and a size 10! I blame the Covid vaccine to be honest, it literally happened within a month of getting it!!

HelpMeGetThrough · 30/09/2024 09:55

I'm on it, along with 15mg of Lisinopril and have not had any problems at all.

The cocktail has brought my blood pressure down from 190/110 to something around normal for me.
