I have around 3 heart palpitations a day - should I do anything?

Hi

I have between 2-5 heart palpitations every day. By palpitation, I mean it races and flutters for around 10 seconds. It’s usually when I’m sat down (ie not exercising), sometimes lying on my left side in bed can set it off.

I do have anxiety and am on propranolol, but the palpitations don’t seem to coincide with when I’m feeling anxious.

Im 43, good BMI, don’t smoke or drink, have 2-3 instant coffees a day.

what do you think, would you see a GP or is it normal?

x

Had these for years.. recently stopped when I started taking iron tablets. Was low iron all along!

I've had heart palpitations from anaemia too. Worth seeing a doctor to see if it's something simple

Yes, see your GP and get checked out.
I discovered I had SVT - supraventricular tachycardia and am now on Bisoprolol daily. Since starting this medication I haven't had any reoccurrence of the heart racing.
I was triggered to go to A&E when my heart started racing and my apple watch recorded it at 208bpm!
My Mum had a catastrophic stroke caused by atrial fibrillation which she didn't know she had. She was left right side paralysed and non-verbal. She lived for 6 years passing away last June.
Anyway, that is worst case but I really think you should get it checked out please.

I get multiple a day. I'm under cardiology for other things and have had 24 hour holter monitoring where they have picked them up. I also find I get them when lying on my left side in particular.

They are nothing to worry about. Can be due to dehydration, lack of minerals or Electrolytes or just a normal thing. Also common in perimenopause. I have been told that unless I get more than 10 in a minute (in which case to go to A&E) I can safely ignore them.

The problem is, once you notice them and focus on them, particularly if you are prone to anxiety like me, the more they seem to happen. It's not necessarily that they're occurring more often, just that you're more aware of them.

I'm also hyper aware of my heartbeat and never used to be. I hope I can start to forget about it one day and just stop noticing it!

Also, sleeping or lying on your left side is not recommended if you have heart palpitations .....

Thanks for this. My Apple Watch did record my heart rate at 180 yesterday, I was on a walk with the kids, but know it’s still high. It can’t of been for a prolonged period though as I didn’t feel it.

I get them a lot Op, had a lot of investigations, tread mill test, a 24 hour monitor, ultra sound, blood tests, ecg… turns out I’m just normal with occasional palpitations. I find they’re worse if I’m dehydrated, hungover or lying on my right hand side in bed… different to others who say left! I can run a 5k in 20 minutes so I’m pretty fit. My anxiety likes to tell me there’s something wrong but I’m trying to listen to the medical experts!

Bloopy2 · 29/09/2024 20:03

It's probably worth mentioning to your GP and maybe getting an ECG but i know with anxiety you are probably thinking you have a serious heart condition or about to have a heart attack so wanted to reassure you that it's very normal to have ectopic beats. If you're getting high HR it's worth getting checked out, it could be lots of easily fixable things like thyroid issues.

MouseofCommons · 29/09/2024 20:09

I had this loads in early peri-menopause. Had to wear a 24hr heart monitor in the end and was diagnosed with SVT.

The consultant said they could treat the SVT if I liked but as I'm really fit it wasn't a big problem and it usually tails off with age anyway. I'm 50 and it has indeed gone away now.

Onlyplans · 29/09/2024 20:10

I’ve had these for a couple of years but seems to be worsening recently and now getting every couple of weeks. I’ve been to the gp and I’m scheduled in for ecg. It terrifies me when happening as can last about 20 mins.

should have added im overweight but trying to work on that at the moment

ginislife · 29/09/2024 20:37

I have SVT and get these. I'm on Flecanaide and got a cardiology appt at the end of October. Makes me feel really poorly if my heart rate trips. It's not good for you to remain with such a high heart rate and you need to get it checked out

Thanks everyone
