Aphasia - anyone any experience?

My Mum had a stroke 10 days ago and is still in hospital (in Dublin). Her only issue seems to be Aphasia - she can't seem to get the right words out.

She will be having speech therapy but not sure yet how or when or even if there is a waiting list.

She may be coming out of hospital this week.

Would like to know if anyone has any positive news about potential for recovery or any tips for both us and her in helping her.

A few years ago I did a little volunteer with work with a charity called UK Conntect. It is a charity set up to work with aphasics and find ways to help them communicate. It went far beyond conventional speech therapy and had some really inspirational ideas. It might be worth contacting them. The website has loads of info about aphasia.

I hope someone who knows more than me can offer more advice soon. Best wishes to your Mum .

Thanks so much artichokes - that looks great - I will have a good read of that later.

Thanks too Sobernow. She is already getting frustrated - and my Dad is not the most patient of people so i would say we are all in for a bumpy ride!
