How do I give my immune system a boost?

PaisleyPatterns · 25/09/2024 12:32

Top tips please. I have had back to back virus, sinusitis, mastitis, eye blepharitis and styes and feel my immune system must be LOW! I have a 16month old at nursery which will be partly to blame, I am also suffering from a sports injury which I have found v stressful and it’s stopped me exercising/getting outdoors like I would normally.

Entering winter on the back foot with my immunity is pretty daunting! Immune system/health booster tips v welcome please!

No help but I'm place marking because I've been looking at supplements today. I've got my first cold this autumn and I know working in retail and coming into contact with so many things people are touching is going to ensure it's not the last.

There's so many different types I'm interested in what works for people so I don't waste money and actually get something that will give my immune system that boost.

I hope you get better soon!

Sleep and rest.
Eat wholesome foods and nutrient dense meats, including offal, nuts and seeds.
Top up Vitamin D.
And exercise when you feel able to.

I came on to say the same, pretty much in that order.

Oh yes just remembered last time I was unwell I put heart and kidneys in things I made to hide it. It really felt healing. I would choose to not eat meat but my body has different ideas! If you can handle them fermented foods, I can't very well so just have yoghurt and sometimes kimchi. Also self massage with some nice oil is really good at feeding your skin and boosting lymph flow.

High dose vitamin d. I like the ones you spray inside of your cheek. They absorb well and taste pleasant.

teraculum29 · 25/09/2024 20:35

fermented food is a key.

Immune boost starts with gut health.

Kefir (plain is the most beneficial as those with added flavours are UPF, full of emulsifiers etc which are not good for gut health)
sauerkraut, or gherkins in brine.

vit D, C and zinc are good for immune boost as well

Sleep. Do some nice stretches a few times a day.

Homemade curry with turmeric, garlic, ginger, chilli, cardamon, cinnamon etc.

Make sure you have some time to yourself each day to just check in and take some deep breaths.

stargirl1701 · 25/09/2024 20:41

I'm trying a Women's multivitamin, cod liver oil and a Vit D spray.

user47 · 25/09/2024 20:44

High dose vit d and c
sauna
healthy food as pp said
streching
sleeping 8 hours
kefir or yogurt
lots of fibre

Autumnweddingguest · 25/09/2024 20:53

Start dosing up on Vit D spray, iron capsules or liquid like Floradix or ferroglobin, Vit B complex and Vitamin C fizzy tablets or freshly squeezed Orange and grapefruit juice.

Cut out all refined sugar as it aggravates inflammation.

Eat foods flavoured with garlic, spices and ginger. Turmeric is especially good for reducing inflammation.

Drink plenty of healthy fluids - water, fruity, spicy and herbal teas, home made soups, alcohol-free toddies.

Eat at least 8 fruit and veg a day - and vary it every day (easier than it sounds with a bit of practise.)

If you use public transport or are in a crowd (school visits etc) use First Defense as a preventative.

Get as much sleep as possible.

Gentle exercise.
Hot baths.
Destressing meditation tapes.

Monkeyrules · 25/09/2024 20:58

Sleep. Relaxation. If it's hard to find the time do the calm app 10 minute meditations.

Fermented food I.e. Chuckling Goat Kefir, plenty of vegetables, nuts and lentils.

Fresh air and walks outside.

No alcohol...it weakens the immune system.

DogandMog · 25/09/2024 20:59

Vitamin D 4,000 iu (upper level recommended by NHS). Take in combo with K2 & magnesium
Grab a gentle dose of sunshine on bare skin when the sun is above 45 deg (sadly not poss now it’s late Sept, unless heading south for a winter sun holiday)
Zinc 15mg
Minimise sugar, alcohol and UPFs
Eat a wholefood diet - mainly meat, fish, shellfish, offal, unsweetened full fat dairy, vegetables, legumes, a bit of whole fruit ie has fibre intact, fermented foods.
Sleep 7 - 8 hours
Manage stress

Don’t assume your immune system is low. As someone with autoimmune conditions constantly being unwell dose not mean a low immune system, your immune system may be overactive and attacking your body.

I would first try the eating healthy, lots of fluids, rest and the hygiene route before supplements. Fresh foods over processed, don’t over do immune boosting foods, eat them in small doses, lots of hand washing and sanitising, obviously extend to your home and family.

I get a lot of styes which turn into infections. Make sure you regularly wash your face, use some warm salted kettle water to bath your eye, use a clean cotton pad, swipe out, bend pad over repeat. Keep doing thins making sure your hands are clean and washed again afterwards. I started using an eye wash in the morning and evenings as well as allergy eye drops, this was about 2 years ago and I’ve gone from having repeated eye infections every few months to only 1 in 2 years. Obviously don’t use makeup on eyes if you’ve used it previously on an infected eye.

If things don’t improve I’d ask the dr for some blood tests before using supplements.

If you're actually fighting something off take echinacea tablets for 10 days (stop then even if you're not well yet, take a 10 day break then have another round if necessary). Or if you feel you're coming down with something you might be able to get rid of it before it takes hold with half a dose of the echinacea for a few days.
.
Saline spray to flush infected mucous out of sinuses, if they're affected, is something I've found helpful.
.
Get outside daily even if it's cold or you're not exercising, even better if you can expose some skin without SPF for 15min. For vitamin D.
.
1000mg vitamin C plus zinc.
.
Gargle with mouthwash, diluted TCP, salt water or something similarly antibacterial if your throat is affected.
.
Ibuprofen or aspirin if anything is swollen, paracetamol if you're feverish. Get the ones with added codeine if you're still in pain with plain ones.

Velvetandgold · 25/09/2024 21:09

The sunlight does something to your brain too that you can't get from a vitamin D tablet. Something to do with the sleep/wake hormones

PaisleyPatterns · 27/09/2024 09:57

Thanks so much everyone, lots of excellent tips. I have just placed a H&B order and planning my next food shop to be as wholesome + gut health boosters as possible
