Baby not right again...intussception question

Hi, I posted a week or so ago when my 5 month baby did a bloody poo...he was otherwise fine, had a bit of a vile runny bottom for a while after but no other symptoms. Doc said it was one of those unexplained things (sample came back clear of lurgies). Since last night tho he has had several meltdowns when he suddenly screams like Ive never known him scream, like hes in agony, for up to an hour. He is tired too, unsurprsiningly given the screaming, and quite grumpy, but when not screaming has managed a couple of feeble smiles and is feeding fine. Went back to doc this morning, baby wasn't screaming at that point and doc couldnt find anything so said he could be getting tummy spasms. He recommended Infacol, but cant see how it would help...? Thought that was for wind?

Im actually concerned something is going on thats not being picked up, a couple of people mentioned intussception - can it come and go before it is diagnosed? I assume he would have other obvious symptoms if it was that? Am getting a bit wound up now, but really dont want to inflict tests on him if Im over reacting. Any thoughts anyone?

I would get him to A& E immediately and explain. He is 5 months and in pain, it seems like your GP is not listening or taking it seriously. Diorreah/ bloody stools in a 5 month old should be taken taken v seriously. I can't believe he told you in was one of those things.

Problem is he is otherwise ok and hes been seen by 2 GPs now neither of which were very concerned! He is currently sleeping quietly. Worried Im being a fusspot, especially when one minute we're both crying in the GP waiting room, then he calms right down and smiles at me....will see how it pans out today, if he worsens Im off to hospital. Actually, may pass it by NHS direct and see what they say.

I remember your thread. Sorry that your baby isstill unwell - hopefully the GPs are right and it's nothing to worry about but I think I would still be worried.

You would know if it was intersussception, it's when a bit of the intestine folds back on itself and would cause a blockage meaning not alot would come out. Babies are really hard to diagnose though. Trust your judgment. If you think there's a problem take him to A&E. You know your child better then anyone else.

My ds passed some blood in a poo when only a few months old - he hadn't been for a couple of days and then had several poos in a day, the first of which caused him some pain. The doctor said that the intestine can tear slightly if you've had a particularly bad poo and that it is nothing to worry about. Was the blood bright red? Darker blood can indicate something more serious.

DS was also a very colicky baby and would scream blue murder for a few hours each day. We did find that Infacol helped. He grew out of it pretty quickly IIRC.

Obviously you know your baby best but just wanted to add a reassuring story.

Ditto what hattrick said. my DD2 had it when she was 6 months old. clearly very unwell although still took some time to diagnose. Not eating, very listless. Eventually picked up by ultrasound. Redcurrant jelly nappies a classic sign apparently. Also drawing knees up to tummy in pain. vomiting bile as well It is pretty uncommon - I was transferred to bigger regional hospital as it needs a specialist paed surgeon to sort out, and he said he only saw 1 a month max, so my local hospital and GP presumably saw very few.
