Is this a reaction to MMR jab?

ds had his MMR jab last week but has been a bit poorly over the weekend. runny nose, whingey, dribbly, nappy rash, bit of a temp.

i thought it was teething (as you do!) but today I've had to go pick him up from nursery as he has a painful spot on the end of his tongue. could this be a reaction to his MMR and if so, what do i do about it? or is it just teething?

(he's 15 mo btw )

What is the site of the injection like?

theUrbanNixie · 21/04/2008 12:47

absolutely fine - can't even see where the needle went in now. there was a little red spot for a couple of days, but that's disappeared.

That's good. The nurse didn't do my son preperly so ended up in hospital with cellulitis.

I would keep an eye on temp, fluid intake, rash situation, etc and phone the surgery for advice if you are at all worried.

How many days ago did he have the jab Urban?

theUrbanNixie · 21/04/2008 12:55

no - the nurse who did ds' was fab, he didn't even cry she was so good! cellulitis sounds like a nightmare - i'm guessing the fat under the skin got infected?

will pass the info onto MIL - she's coming to sit with ds so i can get back to work! thanks for the help.

it was Tues last week so 6 days ago. the nurse said that if there was a reaction it'd take about a week which is why i wondered...

reactions can happen within 10days of the jab. Just check if any white spots on inside of mouth and if he loses appetite at all.

Hope he is just teething but let us know!

NotABanana · 21/04/2008 13:28

We were told at th hospital my son got ill because the needle was injected in the wrong place. When I took my younger son for a jab and requested it be done properly she refused to do it so we had to go back a week later to have someone else do it.

theUrbanNixie · 21/04/2008 17:44

lillee - yes to white spots and loss of appetite. i'm worried now - he's perked up loads but he still won't eat. but then if he had a mouth ulcer then that would explain it. should i phone NHS Direct?

What about fluid intake?

lillee · 21/04/2008 20:04

Urban sorry been bathing/feeding/putting lo down for night.

Not a prof or anything but you should call NHS direct if temp still high but do give him calpol if you can. This happened to my ds on day 9 after jabs for MMR and pneumo - he had measles! Exactly same symptoms and he was being an absolute horror (i thought at the time and feel so guilty now) screaming for everything and nothing but didn't seem up nor down apart from mild symptoms you are seeing. They progressed to really bad - he was being sick every time he ate temp of 40 to 41. Put him in bath and he turned scarlet from top to bottom. I called NHS24 was sent to local hosp to see emergency GP who checked him over. Gave advice on keeping temp down and keeping him comfortable and only giving fluids etc. Next day he was covered in spots head to toe, inside mouth, ears and even on soles of feet and palms of hands.

Sorry but the white spots in mouth are apparently the biggest give away.

How is he at the moment? Are you ok?

lillee · 21/04/2008 20:26

U there UrbanNixie? Hope i haven't freaked you out!!! How are you and the wee one at the moment?

theUrbanNixie · 21/04/2008 20:41

hi - i'm here!

i phoned NHS direct and the nurse i spoke to said it sounded like an allergic reaction to something. the spots are more like ulcers - white heads surrounded with pink - rather than spots. he seems much brighter now although he was being like you say, screaming for no reason whatsoever spraying his food at me generally being a nightmare!

i'm at work tomorrow but will get dh to keep a close on eye on him and show him your posts as well.

Good, so you got in contact with NHS24 then. Sorry didn't mean to worry you just sounded so familiar and i know i was at my wits end with my ds who only had this a month ago - if that! I thought he was becoming a brat and had a bit of a cold and teething at the same time at that point.

Anyway, you seem to have it in hand and i hope all is well. Not a bad idea to keep it in mind though, especially if he is behaving like 'somebody else's child' into the bargain!

Good luck and let us know how you all are. Have a good night

lillee · 22/04/2008 20:07

Hi UrbanNixie, you around? How's your lo today? Hope you got a bit of sleep last night!!
