Struggling with Body Odor Despite Daily Hygiene Routine

Hi everyone, I’m really hoping to get some advice because I’m at my wit’s end. I’ve been dealing with a serious body odor problem, and nothing seems to be working. Here’s what I’m currently doing:

•	I shower every single day.
•	I apply deodorant and antiperspirant (sometimes even at night).
•	I try different deodorant brands, but nothing seems to work for long. The one that worked the best was Mitchum, but it stained my white clothes yellow and left white marks on my colored clothes.
•	I also wash my clothes after every wear, but they still smell like sweat, even after a second wash.

Despite all of this, I still smell terrible—like sweat, and it’s so embarrassing. I can’t afford costly solutions like Botox treatments, and I’ve already tried a lot of different deodorants and hygiene products.

Does anyone have affordable tips or advice on how to deal with this? Especially for clothes that still carry that sweat smell even after washing? I’d really appreciate any help at this point!

Thanks so much in advance!

You need to use proper soap, not Dove or shower gels. I use the white Imperial Leather.
I shower twice a day now.
And I use Asda’s baby section liquid talc in betweeen and under my boobs to stop the smell from tnere.
Also cotton underwear, socks and clothes.

BackPainQuestions · 23/09/2024 08:21

I use the dettol laundry sanitiser for gym kit that has got whiffy even after washing. I think there are own brand versions.

Sniff the armpits of your clean clothes to see if they still smell. I found that the armpits of my teenage son’s school shirts stunk of BO as soon as I put the hot iron on them. I had to squirt Vanish on the armpits before washing, and I had to throw them away half way through the year and get new ones. Yet he showered daily and used deodrant.

Dove soap is alright!

SilverPiscis · 23/09/2024 08:25

Are you sure you smell? Have you asked anyone in your family if that's really the case?
I used to work with a woman who was onsessed with her smell and was so worried she smelled badly, she even left work in some occassions or didn't come to work. She didn't smell at all, nobody else could notice anything, it was clearly something psychological in her case...I am not saying this is your case, but please consider this

Imperial leather smells like old people 🤢

SilverPiscis · 23/09/2024 08:28

You also say that some clothes still carry the sweat smell after washing, which i think it is difficult unless you are using a super short programme with cold water...if you haven't, I will check this with someone who you can trust and can be sincere

Creativemumof3 · 23/09/2024 08:30

I used to have this issue until I started using the brand 'sure' under arm roll on. Hope it helps!!

Ilovemyshed · 23/09/2024 08:31

No deodorant works for me for more than a couple of hours except Sure in the solid cream variety.

As others have said, use a solid soap not a shower gel. Maybe try coal tar soap.

Add a stain remover to your washing, use a spray on underarms and wash things a bit hotter /longer if you can.

Dryshampoofordays · 23/09/2024 08:31

You can buy disposable armpit pads to protect your clothes that you could change through the day? Or T-shirts with built in armpit pads that get washed, they stop sweat patches rather than smells so they would probably carry the smell. I think once the smell is in the clothes it’s hard to get rid of

PJ04JCW · 23/09/2024 08:33

Have you tried driclor?
And bio washing powder/anti bacterial laundry liquid?
Hope you sort it

cosygingerkitten · 23/09/2024 08:35

I'm sorry you feel this way. Other posters give sensible advice but one more thing g to try is a body scrub on your arm pits to change your microbiome a bit - driving a switch in the balance of bacteria and fungi that live naturally on your skin can help with these things

zzplex · 23/09/2024 08:39

Oh, it's one of these threads again.

Soap not shower gel. Wash the underarms well, over a wide area. (Dove bars aren't soap, they're cleansing bars, whatever that is.)

Washing clothes: white vinegar on the underarms before washing as normal - kills the sweat bacteria that lingers in fabric. You don't necessarily need to do it before every wash, depends how sweaty you get. You can also get in-wash laundry sanitizer, eg Dettol, that you put in the washing machine.

Synthetic fibres are bad for holding sweat bacteria - natural fibres are better so choose them if possible. If you can't, eg work uniform, try wearing a thin short-sleeved cotton t-shirt underneath.

Dove soap is alright!

Dove soap has lots of moisturiser in it, so it’s not fully soap. I like Dove, but in this instance it’s not the best product

If you read what I wrote you can see I mentioned the white Imperial Leather, which doesn’t smell like the original.

Icarus40 · 23/09/2024 08:44

Another vote for washing your armpits with bar soap and using dettol laundry sanitiser when you wash your clothes.

I don't buy/wear clothes that are tight under the arms.

I wander round in just my bra for a while after applying deodorant (Mitchum roll on) to let it dry and it doesn't stain my clothes. If I do see a white mark on my black vests it rubs off pretty easily.

dothehokeycokey · 23/09/2024 08:45

Sainsburys do a roll on called triple
Dry

Think it's about £6 but works perfectly for me as I have the same problem.
I'm sure mines perimenopause related as I never used to get it.

I use pears bar soap and then shower gel in the shower and you need to apply the deodorant at night to dry in and it works a treat

I also used to spray the arm pits of my clothing with white vinegar spray before washing which worked

Rendang · 23/09/2024 08:45

I agree with a previous poster to use bar soap on your arm pits.

I also shave my armpits everyday as I think this helps too.

Don't use ‘see through’ bar soap like Pears, it doesn’t seem to work. Dove isn’t soap and won’t work on your pits.

Imperial Leather works as does Shield but I don’t like the smell. I buy French bar soap (Savon De Marseille) which I love. They are gorgeous and come in a variety of scents.

As someone else has suggested check your clothes don’t smell of sweat. Some of them you can get the sweat smell out of but if it is too imbedded just get rid.

I suggest you buy some cheap new T-shirts and a cheap bar soap and use/wear these for a few days then you know the soap works. If you then wear your previous clothes and start smelling sweaty again you know it is the clothes not your new routine.

Lovethatforyouhun · 23/09/2024 08:49

try this for a few weeks-

Body- Proper soap always. Use exfoliating mits on underarms once a week with soap.

Clothes- Don’t overload your washing machine. Tumble dry clothes hot. Wash at 40 and use Persil short cycle liquid BIO or bio powder.

drink and eat pineapple

FuckThePoPo · 23/09/2024 08:49

I think the washing at 30 does it as well although that might not be your problem!

wash with powder at 40 and not quick washes. This helps with clothes smelling I've found.

oh and yes to soap under arms as well

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/09/2024 08:50

Detail soap and Mitchum spray (find spray much more effective than roll on or block)

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/09/2024 08:51

Dettol not detail!

niadainud · 23/09/2024 08:51

Have you been to the GP to see if there might be a medical cause?

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/09/2024 08:55

You need proper bar soap under your arms, not shower gel. The shower gel is fine to use afterwards if you want, but you need proper soap for cleanliness.
