Stormy weather and Joint Pain

JustLaura · 22/09/2024 07:22

Is anyone experiencing worsened joint pain due to the stormy UK weather?

I can't sleep as no comfortable pain-free position.

Mainly lower back (S.I. region) and right hip is specifically painful radiating to my inner thigh.

I'm going to increase my Vitamin D to see if that helps.

Any tips appreciated.

Me too. Sciatica I think?

DrunkTinkerbell40s · 22/09/2024 07:25

Yep I have fibromyalgia and suffer so much more in the damp cold.

Have you had your b12 tested? I would get that tested but don't take a supplement before you do as it can skew the results x

Is your pain constant but worse in this weather?

My seems to be bad 3 out of 4 weeks. I have wondered if it's cycle related but I keep thinking this wouldn't just effect 1 hip then?

Thanks @DrunkTinkerbell40s

I was tested a few years ago and it was low then. I was told to take a multi-vit a day.

Feeling generally grotty.

Mine flares up occasionally. I have booked a physio appointment. I move around as if I am in my 90s at the moment.

Mouglaseast · 22/09/2024 08:47

I am in peri/ menopause and my body aches have been particularly bad this weekend.

Same here! Physio seems to help my pains but doesn't help mobility wise. I'm far worse than normal currently though.

Me too. Joint issues seem to my main symptom but I have many peri symptoms. I'm not on HRT just trying to manage it myself but this weekend is another level! I'm getting earache and gum ache which I'm attributing to the storm.

Joint pain can be affected by barometric pressure. Pressure goes down ahead of a storm. Maybe you could get a barometer or electronic weather station - or follow a weather website - so that you could at least predict it a bit and adapt accordingly? Vitamin D levels won't rise and fall so quickly although I don't think it ever hurts to keep your levels up.

I was just going to write this! Drops in barometric pressure may lead to an increase in synovial fluid around joints, which some people are sensitive to. As I’ve got older (77 now), I certainly notice more aches and pains when the air pressure drops ahead of bad weather.

Finding the response's interesting.

I have severe rheumatoid Arthritis and over the last few days it's been bad. I know I spent hours driving last Saturday (15 hours in total), but it usually settles down after a couple of days when I've done that.

We had a pretty bad thunderstorm yesterday morning and I was in a lot of pain all day.

Cold/damp weather does affect me, which I expect, but it's far from cold here at the moment (17 to 20 degrees).

ForPearlViper · 22/09/2024 11:58

Bear in mind barometric pressure and temperature do not necessarily correlate.

CrepuscularCritter · 22/09/2024 12:23

My hands, wrists and knees are generally affected by rain or storms. Currently trying to warm everything up with blankets. My mum would always say I had the "sign of the claw" when bad weather was due. Psoriatic arthritis here.

worldwidetravel2017 · 22/09/2024 12:56

I was going to suggest getting
Vit d
B12
And feretin tested

April - june 2023 - i was low in all 3 and felt horrendous

shellyleppard · 22/09/2024 12:57

Yes I am exactly the same. My physiotherapist has said that joint problems get worse with damp/cold weather. I'm taking jointace supplements, they have a really good range

Thanks. I will take a look at them to see what's combined. It beats taking multiple tablets if it's combined into 1!

Yes, my joints are definitely worse when the weather takes a turn. 2 x paracetamol before bed helps me get to sleep if I can't get comfortable enough to relax.

shellyleppard · 22/09/2024 21:00

@JustLaura they are currently on offer with Holland and Barrett, I use mail order as my nearest shop is too far away.

DrunkTinkerbell40s · 23/09/2024 08:25

@JustLaura if you eat meat and dairy, and you're low in b12, it's because you can't sufficiently absorb b12. Any meat and dairy eaters who are low in b12 should be given b12 injections, not pill supplements, as you won't sufficiently absorb them x your b12 numbers will increase in a blood test due to you taking a supplement but your body cannot use it.

My b12 numbers dont even increase with supplements

I have eggs very regularly
And potato a few times a week

worldwidetravel2017 · 23/09/2024 08:38

Do you take supplements as they could skew your results?
Your numbers are in the normal range but people can be b12 deficient and still show as 'normal'. This is especially the case if they take a supplement or if their folic acid is low.
If you have symptoms I'd join a b12 group on fb who will help. There's a good one call pernicious anaemia and b12 deficiency or something like that x

Drs tested me for pernicious anemia
They say i dont have it

I dont have fbk

My folic acid is high as i take it daily on prescription

I have IBS
And a colon that keeps making benign polyps - have had 3 x colonoscopies

DrunkTinkerbell40s · 23/09/2024 10:33

@worldwidetravel2017 yep I'm the same, doctors say I don't have PA but I clearly don't absorb as my b12 was 100. I now inject myself weekly as after three years of doc giving me injections they stopped because I don't have PA as far as they're concerned. 50% of people with PA don't test positive for it (or a figure similar to that)
