Redness round eye caused by adhesive from eye patching.. any ideas ?

My dd is 2.4 and since Thurs we have been patching her eye for 4hours a day. I read on a US website that to help minimise the pain of removing the patch, you should apply vaseline to the outer edges of the patch an hour or so before removing it, to weaken the adhesive.

I have done this but her skin is still red where the patch has been, even though I hold the skin while peeling it off.

I am worried her skin will get sore to the point she won't let me apply the patch anymore as her skin hurts. It's hard enough to get her to wear it already.

Any advice on what cream to apply or how to remove the patch easier would be appreciated.

she could be allergic to the adhesive I am allergic to plasters etc.

antihistamine cream first then vaseline?

thanks cargirl - the redness is only above the cheekbone where we're able to 'press' the patch onto the skin the easiest (as opposed to near the bridge of her nose where it is a bit harder). maybe i will just try not to stick it so hard..

you can get different patches for those who are sensitive to them, as my ds is, or they can give you a patch that slips on the actual glasses instead

hi lou33 - hers goes directly onto her skin - she doesn't wear glasses as well, but i shall defo enquire about the ones for sensitive skin if this persists.. thanks.

There's a technique involving applying calamine lotion to the skin before putting the patch on or, I think putting the lotion on the skin the skin on your hand, letting it dry and then sticking and unsticking the patch a few times to made it less adhesive - there are some quite exact directions for how to do it and I can't remember them, but the best places to look would be the eye patch uk site on the bottom of this link (which also has a number of different patch suppliers) www.childhoodcataracts.org.uk/content/patching-or-occlusion-therapy
also the APHAKIC yahoo group has a lot of members who are patching a lot of hours and using sticky patches (where I've seen it described), so they can probably give you the magic formula health.groups.yahoo.com/group/aphakic/
