Abnormally high FIT test result

Hello
Having gastro issues with bleeding, for a few weeks.
Did fit test at the start of the week with follow up phone appointment next week.
Just logged in to app to see if the results are in and it says:

Result is grater then 200. Recommended 2 week cancer pathway.
So now it's 11pm and I'm freaking out.

Also had a blood test which is normal range for everything.

Anyone had similar result?

What an awful time of night to be dealing with that information!

A positive FIT just means there is blood present which can be for a whole bunch of reasons with cancer being very low down the list. Could even just be piles!

The 2ww pathway is just standard in this situation, it's not cos they think you have cancer, it's to exclude that as quickly as possible.

Do not Google, it is not your friend!

your gp is just following nice guidance ….2 week urgent referral is standard for a positive fit result ……it doesn’t mean you have cancer ….it means they need to investigate to rule it in/out…..could be loads of reasons ….and it’s very reassuring that your bloods are all normal……ring up tomorrow to make sure the referral has been sent……wishing you well

9 out of ten people put on this pathway do not have cancer.

Please try not to worry. The urgency is so they can rule it out quickly and find out one of the many other things it could be.

I was told by GP not to do FIT test with active bleeding as it would give an inaccurate result. I took sample when there wasn't any obvious blood on the stool but got a positive result anyway (in the 40s iirc). Referred on the 2 week pathway with the reassurance that 90-odd per cent of cases are benign/not cancerous. Still worried, obvs. Mine was internal haemorrhoids. GP hadn't found anything during rectal exam.

Hope you're feeling better soon Easter GrinFlowers

Edit - fuck! I have fat fingers! I meant the flowers but please ignore random grinning bunny that I'm unable to delete Blush

If you don't mind answering, How long did you bleed for with haemorrhoids?

My fit test was in the 200s.

I don't have bowel cancer. I did have multiple polyps.

How did they treat them?

You will probably be referred for a colonoscopy where they will check and take biopsies of anything they see. My DH has had a few and has colitis and diverticulitis that was found after his fit test. If you have piles, the bleeding from them is usually bright red and they are painful. It is a worrying time, but like previous posters it can be any manor of conditions. The 2 week cancer pathway is standard, but they will tell you all this when you speak to them.

I can't recall exactly, had a bit of blood when wiping occasionally over a period of months but sporadic and no real pattern to it so I kind of put my head in the sand and hoped it would go away.
When I decided I needed to do something about it there had been more blood for maybe 3 or 4 days in a row and it was getting worse (apologies for being graphic and tmi - morning of call to GP whole toilet pan was bright red and there was a couple of small clots on wiping).

When I had the colonoscopy the consultant said the internal piles were treatable and he'd be happy to band them but it wasn't urgent and only needed it doing if they bothered me. They don't really and only bleed if I get constipated so I haven't booked in, just make sure I eat healthily/plenty of fibre and fluids.

@justasmalltownmum

I had to go back for a sigmoidoscopy and have them removed.

Some hospitals do this when they find them. Wish mine had!

PuppiesLove · 22/09/2024 00:11

Failed and knew I would. Turned out I had IBD and never knew it.

WandaFishy99 · 22/09/2024 00:19

@justasmalltownmum just to jump in on your question, I lost a lot of blood with mine until I had them operated on. My brother was seriously anaemic due to his, so much that he was in hospital for a transfusion.
Mine was so bad I had to wear a pad at all times. I didn't do a FIT test, GP referred me straight for a colonoscopy which showed nothing except for the haemorrhoids.
