Rash after swimming

My dd (11) has joined a swimming club and is now swimming twice a week for around an hour each time. She's started to come out in a rash afterwards, mainly on her arms. Do you think this is a reaction to chlorine? It's a flat rash and slightly itchy. She's been swimming regularly since she was 5 and hasn't had any problems but previously was only going for about a half-hour once a week. She really loves swimming and would be heartbroken if she had to stop. She had very mild eczema as a baby but no problems since. I wondered about using some kind of barrier cream before she swims but not sure what to try. Also reminding her to shower well afterwards. Any thoughts welcome.

Hi grassland I remember when I was a child and used to go swimming with the school, everytime we used 'floats' several of us would have rashes afterwards, on our arms, legs or bellies (if it was a boy) Now I'm not sure what that was about but no one seemed unduly concerned about it so it may be just her skin rubbing on the foam if that's what they are using?

I was just going to suggest the floats/woggles whatever - DD gets something similar.

Thanks. I don't think they use floats but I'll check with her tomorrow. I still think it might be the chlorine but it's odd it's only on her arms.

You should report it to the pool in case it's a problem with the water, but I doubt they'll do much more than their usual water tests unless several people have been affected (but that's why you need to report it in case there were several people on the same day). We occasionally have swimmers at club come out in unexplained rashes, but it generally seems to be a random thing - ie the same swimmer doesn't get a rash the next time they swim and we don't get more than one case at a time.

I would try a barrier cream though and see if it helps. I'd have thought Aqueous creme should do the job.
