Itching and sore after unusual period

I had an unusual, for me, period last week. Was due to start on Sunday (8th) but I didn't come on. I then had awful stomach cramps and nausea Monday and Tuesday, like I was trying to come on but didn't.
I came on wednesday and was then heavy for 2 days.
Friday my vulva and vagina opening were v sore and itchy, seemed quite dry.

I haven't got any discharge to suggest thrush but chemist suggested canestan cream. I've been using it since then and it isn't as bad now but it is still very itchy, particularly around my clitoris.

It is driving me mad. Any ideas if or why that weird period would have caused it? Or is it coincidence? Wondering if I should treat with thrush pessary or go to GP

It's driving me mad!

For info I am 45. Last couple of periods were lighter than recently but this one was back to heavy with lots of clots (sorry tmi) but only for 2 days

I think I would go to the GUM clinic for a screen and check up. It's their area and faster than going to a GP.

Could it just be fluctuating hormones and the itching is actually hormonal perimenopause related?

I had something similar to this recently, I eventually figured out it was the soap I was using. Soaps are generally way too harsh for intimate areas, and that along with my hormones were causing such severe itching I was going crazy.
I tried using oilatum cream instead as a soap- before you shower, smother it all over and leave it for a few minutes then rinse off. Within days it was back to normal.
I’ve now got a bottle in the shower and after washing I cover my whole body (while wet) in it and don’t bother rinsing off. Saves having to moisturise and my skin has never felt better.

Can’t help but can share my experience. I’m going through similar right now. I assumed UTI as it was itching ‘higher up’ and not ‘inside’, like when I’ve experienced thrush. It’s been painful and keeping me awake. I got an emergency telephone appointment with GP and they were not that helpful. Said it was probably thrush and would not see me. I told him that it was not itching in the same place as thrush which I’d had before, so he said I could come in and do a urine sample for a dip test. I did this and it has come back as showing blood in the urine, but because I was just finishing my period they put it down to that and won’t take further, just told me to use canesten. Today I bought a canesten diagnosis kit which detects bacteria, it came back as negative (so I don’t have bacterial vagenosis), so the instructions say it is either nothing, or, because there is itching, then it is yeast infection, ie thrush, and to use canesten as GP suggested.
I don’t know what to think, the swab you have to do is taken inside the vagina, so not at all where I was itching, so not sure how reliable it is. Test appears to be for ‘all areas’ of vagina, so it should pick up bacteria if it’s there. I’m still not convinced it’s not a water infection. I feel exhausted and randomly keep getting pins and needles in my left leg. GP dismissed all this. Trying the canesten thrush cream and hoping for the best.

Please to to the GUM clinic. It's not all about STDs. This is their area and they won't stop until they've figured out what the problem is

If your sexually active you need an STI test, if not maybe hormones relating to start of menopause

This is happening to me as well! It's horrible, you have my sympathy. It's not like a UTI, or cystitis or thrush. It feels dry, sore and itchy.
