HELP what is wrong with dd1?????

leedslassy · 20/04/2008 15:59

My dd1 was complaining of a tummy ache but it wet on for a week or so. In the end we took her to the dr who did a dipstick urine test which showed the highest level of protein and blood in the urine. She got a 5 day dose of antibiotics and we went back a week later for another dipstick test - no improvement. A sample was sent off this time for testing but came back clear. Dipstick still showed high blood and protein - this pattern has been repeated over the last 3 weeks each time coming back from the lab clear but dipstick still showing the high levels of blood & protein. The last test was sent off for a cytology test and has come back clear so at least her kidneys are ok but the nurse did a further dipstick on Friday but still no change in levels of blood & protein. She suggested we go back to see dr.
I am getting worried now as for almost a month we have no answers as to why the high levels are present and what the tummy ache could be. Sorry to go on but I am not sure what to do.

see the doc asap and insist on some answers. if you are in anyway disatisfied with them, insist on seeing a consultant urologist (i think thems the peeps)

if you get no luck that way, then just wait till the doc is closed and go to a&e and present dd with her tummy ache, explain the history, chances are a consultant will pick up the case and get to the bottom of it.

What other symptoms does she have?Doers she look swollen or puffy?

leedslassy · 20/04/2008 16:17

will ring dr tomorrow and tell them I want it sorting.

leedslassy · 20/04/2008 16:18

no she doesn't look swollen or puffy. No other symptoms.

an infection in the urinary tract left unfixed for some time will eventually cause problems you dont want. good luck at the docs.

leedslassy · 22/04/2008 11:52

I have been to the doctors with her and the 5th test has come back high in protein and blood but showing no abnormal cells or bacteria. The doctor basically admitted that he doesn't know what else to do and so is going to refer her to the paediatric urology dept at the hospital where they may need to do a scan of her bladder area etc to see what's going on.
I am really worried now and have been in tears for the last half an hour.

Could you take her there as an emergency? She's in pain and it's been going on too long now. Really sorry for you xx

Fllight · 22/04/2008 11:56

It might take weeks to get an appt, she's hurting, this isn't good enough, I'm shocke at the gp for not taking it more seriously.

stealthsquiggle · 22/04/2008 12:01

Did the GP say how long it would take? They have messed around looking for things for far too long before referring, IMHO. They should be doing this now as an urgent referral with an expectation of an appointment in the next few days.

littleshebear · 22/04/2008 12:02

Is her tummy still hurting? I don't know if it's relevant or not, but my Dh had severe acne as an adolescent and had to have routine blood/urine tests. His urine tests showed up protein in his urine, and there was a lot of kerfuffle and tests because they thought it might be a problem with his kidneys. It turned out to be probably that he had had a viral infection sometime in the past which had probably damaged his kidenys slightly, so they were letting protein through(?)Not sure about the details!. This was 25 years ago and he has had no other problems at all.If she's been referred you will hopefully have some answers soon. Hope you both feel better soon- what a worry for you.

leedslassy · 22/04/2008 12:13

Not sure TBH - he said they would write to me with the appointment. I asked him if she needed any more antibiotics in the meantime and he said no, to just wait for the appt. I'm not happy really - do you think I should ring back and ask for an idea of timescales?

OP posts:
Fllight · 22/04/2008 12:15

Yes, but then I would be at the hospital now, demanding some tests be done.

a month is a long time.

Hope you get somewhere soon xx

It's not your fault you're being fobbed off like this.

stealthsquiggle · 22/04/2008 12:21

I think it would be entirely reasonable for you to ring the surgery now. Say you have some questions following your appointment, and ask to speak to the doctor.

Then ask him - has he referred this as an urgent requirement, and if not why not, and how long you should expect to have to wait for an appointment.

Then at least you know. Just leaving things for a month while you mess around with repeated tests is not acceptable with children IMO - things can develop so quickly, and he has left you stressed and worried with no idea how long you might be waiting.

leedslassy · 22/04/2008 12:38

F*ing Heck - bloody receptionists!!! Just rang her and gave her the history and asked if I could find out how long I should wait and what in the meantime do I do with a child with bad tummy ache for the next god knows how long. She tried to fob me off by sayng that she won't know anything until hs notes come through to type up tomorrow!! I said I felt like I had been left hanging and would like him to ring me back as I want to ask him how to deal with her and also how long I should wait - he is hopefully going to ring me back as she has left him a message to do so.
What could it be? All i want is some answers.

stealthsquiggle · 22/04/2008 12:48

'until the notes come through to type up'

..I take it your GP surgery has not decided to join the rest of us in this century yet, then - our GP's notes are all on computer.

I hope he calls you anyway, and as for what it could be - no idea, but I hope some helpful MNer passes this way soon.

Fllight · 22/04/2008 13:07

I think in that case bypass the surgery, and take her to A&E and wait till you are seen by someone who cares that your child is in pain and you are terrified. I have no idea if this is a plausible thing to do, but it looks like the only option unless you can bear to wait for the next few weeks.

The least they owe her and you is an explanation of what it could be, some ideas for treating the pain and some fast investigation.

3littlefrogs · 22/04/2008 13:18

A&E today - she needs to see a renal consultant. (Am at work so have to type quick and be discreet)

Fllight · 22/04/2008 13:24

Bump for Leedslassy - listen to Frogs, LL.

Fllight · 22/04/2008 13:27

Bump again

mankymummy · 22/04/2008 13:33

Go to A&E.

Exagerate the symptoms a bit if you have to. Wouldnt normally say this but your little one is in pain and i'm sure she deserves to be seen quickly.

You have nothing to lose by going and you'd never forgive yourself if going now could have saved her a lot of pain.

Fllight · 24/04/2008 07:33

Any news Leedslassy?

I hope you've been getting some help xx

Umlellala · 24/04/2008 07:47

Got to A&E (they may have walk-in), my local surgery tells me to do that when they don't have any appts. Agree you have nothing to lose by going - and it IS what your NI pays for!! Hope she feels better soon...

(This was how I got my colitis diagnosed (when stupid GP ignored all symptoms.)
