Blood tests. Confusing result

GiRaFfeNeSs · 16/09/2024 10:56

Had blood tests done; I thought they were just to check on my sudden onset severe anaemia (not iron deficiency, folate/ferritin/hg all OK). Was told it could indicate internal bleeding.

Going through gynae 2ww. Ultrasound OK.

Called GP for this lot of blood tests and have been told my white blood cell count is 'highly irregular') but was fine 3 weeks earlier and I have tumour markers present. Does this mean I have some type of tumour? Ovaries and fallopian tubes already removed. I'm not worried, I'm just so confused.

No worries, wasn't sure if anyone may know but seems not.

I called my GP to make an appointment to discuss it - 16th October for a telephone consultation! That's quite a wait so will try to discuss with gynae next Thursday.

It doesn't sound like it's satisfactory so push for an earlier gp appointment.

Hi @GiRaFfeNeSs

Do you know what the test result figures are? They will give a better indication especially if the White Blood Count and other levels are off e.g. basophils/eosinophils etc.

Do you have any other symptoms?

We're other blood tests done?

Birdseyetrifle · 16/09/2024 19:43

Was your ca125 taken and is that high?
High white cell count can indicate infection/inflammation but also some cancers like leukaemia.

rubyslipperss · 17/09/2024 08:01

Ring GP back this morning - if you have been told possible internal bleeding they may need to do other tests eg gastro / Fit test etc . Also ask about white feels and what they mean for you . Say you're not happy and you want to speak to someone .
Irregular white blood cells - are they high low ? They can indicate a whole range of things .

Sorry for not replying to your messages sooner, I think I've been trying to blank things out. 3 months ago i had surgery for a growth; I had 2 lymph nodes and a lot of breast tissue removed. I was told it was 'pre-cancerous' and I didn't really understand that but didn't ask questions as I had no idea how to react. They said I would be tested again in a year, bit I still didn't ask questions. I moved out of area so no idea whether my care has been transferred across.

I haven't called to gp again yet as I don't know how to ask or ho to respond to whatever answer is given. I think that because of other life changing conditions, and many hospital admissions, it's left me a bit numb to it all whilst at the same time having the worry niggling away in the background. I don't have anyone to talk to apart from my carers. My children are amazing, but I don't feel I can put them through any more worry because the last 4 years have been truly awful health-wise (almost died 5 times and the worry that gave my children was awful to witness)

Sorry for the ramble. I don't even really know why I updated, but I do know that my indecision about calling my GP is not helping.

Hi @GiRaFfeNeSs

No one should judge you as we don't live your life. You make your decisions and as long as you're happy with the decisions you make that's ok.

You are obviously intelligent and recognise that your health is everything.

Having said that, have you seen the advert on TV about a guy having xyz symptoms, going to the GP, having tests and then they 'open a box', look inside (as in the results) and there was nothing inside the box.

The thought is often far worse than the reality in my experience. It may be something easily remedied and you've already proved you are really strong to come this far.

It may be worrying and anxiety that are making you feel worse.

There will always be people on Mumsnet to chat to even if it's just a ramble!

I imagine you will get a host of positive experience messages that may help.

Stay positive.

Thank you for such a reassuring reply, I really appreciate it. I just feel like I have some sort of massive, brain fart when it comes to asking questions!

Can you write the questions down and just hand them into your GP reception and ask for a phone call to discuss? You may feel better talking over the phone rather than face to face?

or

Email the questions and explain you are obviously anxious about it all so you would prefer a written reply?

This can then be followed up by an appointment?

I've done both to be honest!

GiRaFfeNeSs · 23/09/2024 16:39

I have no information about either the white blood cell counts or the tumour marker type results. I recall the GP saying CA 125 and CA119 but there were 3 or 4 others I can't remember.

I can't get online access to test results (or anything useful for that matter) since charging GP when I moved house.

I have managed to call the surgery a short while ago. The receptionist obviously couldn't tell me anything but has brought my phone appointment forward from 16th October to next Monday.

That's good then. Less time to wait.

When I changed GP I had to give written consent to access my online account for results so that might be worth looking into. Depending how you feel about it, you might get some answers sooner that way.

Easier said than done I know but, try to only deal with facts not what it's.

Also and this is a big one to remember - IF it is serious, the GP would contact you. They have a duty of care to you as their patient.

Keep us updated and remember Mumsnet is a great place to ramble, vent or just chat.

I'm on here a lot and happy to chat whenever.

Hi, I spoke to a GP on Monday, as planned. The raised tumour marker is the CA19-9 which he said normally involves the pancreas, common bile duct, which I already know is at least twice it's normal width, and liver. I have awful bouts of very low blood sugar (non-diabetic hypoglycaemia, with no cause identified yet) and this has caused quite a few emergency hospital admissions. The raised marker can also be due this excessive inflammation.

Anyway, the GP has already order a 2ww CT and HRCT scan. He's also arranged more blood tests.

I'm not worried or panicking about the possible scenarios. I'm just tired and fed up of endless hospital visits/tests and having to really push to find out what's happening.
