Big decrease in appetite - any ideas?

Over the past month I’ve developed quite a decrease in appetite, it could almost be described as an aversion to food. Typically I’m quite a foodie, adore cooking and love eating (a bit too much..) so for me this is very unusual! Even my usual favourite meals feel forced down at the minute, there’s just no enjoyment in it. I’m eating about half of what I normally would - currently on one meal a day (not a big one) and an evening snack.

No other illness or symptoms. I only ever lose my appetite when I am very stressed or struggling mentally - I’m neither of those things at the minute and would say that I’m really quite happy in myself.

I’m not complaining as I do need to lose a few kgs and this is definitely helping… however, at the same time I’m worried that this could be a sign of something else. Any ideas? I’ve rang the GP multiple times this week to try and book in for bloods but no such luck..

Thyroid disease can cause decreased appetite (both underactive and overactive!). It can also cause unexplained weight gain or weight loss. It’s a pain to pin down! Maybe ask for some routine blood tests just in case.

I mean you’d have to speak to a GP first not just ask for bloods, but I’m sure they’d add thyroid to their list of routine tests with that symptom.

Yes, I am aware of that. I was trying to book a GP appointment - I didn’t just ring up and ask for bloods.

Thanks - had a Google and overactive thyroid does seem like a potential explanation

I've been diagnosed with an overactive thyroid and I had the loss of appetite and unintentional weight loss too. Do you feel fatigued or unusually anxious at all? Also does your heart rate accelerate seemingly out of nowhere? These are all symptoms of overactive thyroid. Definitely get yourself booked in for blood test. Better to know and get it sorted ☺️

Yes, unusual anxiety paired with insomnia - even when I do get a full night I’m shattered!

I’m not one to weigh myself often but I do think that I may have lost a bit of weight judging by the fit of my jeans

Ah yes the good old insomnia on top of being shattered all day 😅 I've got an energetic two year old too so honestly feel like I'm dying of exhaustion most days. definitely get some bloods done because those symptoms are all indicative of a thyroid issue. Hope you manage to get one sorted asap 🤞
