Hi, I have IBS have been suffering for the past 9 months. When i first had it i had most of the symptoms, diarhoera (sp) bloated tum, major back ache, cramps, tiredness. Diarhoera is my main problem.

I have been to the doctors and have been given meds for bloated tum, cramps and back ache.

I know u can take Imodium for diarhoera but i cant take this on a daily basis. I am finding it impossible to eat anything and its really getting me down! I know my body is already suffering, i can only manage to eat cereal, so three bowls a day for me and thats it. Im not getting enough calories and not enough vitamins, minerals etc

I was advised to keep a diary to see what triggers it but ANYTHING i eat does!!

Just be nice to hear from anyone else suffering with IBS and any ideas/advise?

Thanks

TBH prettyfull, I more or less decided to carry on as normally as I could.

I did try changing my diet, but it made no difference to my IBS and so I now eat whatever I like, as before, although I do avoid spicy curries, baked beans and broccoli.

At first i was really really upset about it, and this in turn was making the IBS worse. I was paranoid that I was going to have an accident somewhere.

The worst time of day for me is first thing in the morning. I get bad stomach cramps every morning, and normally have to go to the loo at least twice, and up to 4/5 times. I have kind of got know when I don't think the dioreah is going to stop easily, and then I will take an immodium.

I did orginally start taking them every day that I knew i'd be out for any longer than a coupl of hours, but i became constipated.

Now, I only take them if i feel i really really need to, and I keep some of immodium tabs that melt in your mouth in my bag for emergencies.

I can understand why you feel anxious about having problems at your blokes place, and this is something that has crossed my mind, but at the mo it isn't an issue as I am single. Not sure what I will do if I eventually meet someone tbh.

I was reffered to an NHS dietician as I had such a rough time with IBS. Suprisingly she told me to cut back on fruit and veg and eat more white bread and stodgy food, called a low residue diet. She said that some people are really sensitive to roughage in their diet and it messes them up. Also have to drink mineral water when I get a flare up, she said the local tap water has a slightly high rate of cyrptosporidium bacteria which can irritate some peoples guts. I have been so much better since I saw her.

Agree that eating alone in peace and quiet helps too!

I have to take Immodium, although I don't take them every day, tend to take them when I need to go out (used to take them before driving lessons lol). However, I have to take 2-3 to stop me getting an upset tummy, so you're doing well just taking 1 a day!!

I too know that my is stress related, the change to my diet has only done so much, and because of the IBS I have much higher anxiety levels than I used to and don't cope very well with illness, in fact I feel nauseous most of the time nowadays.

I have asked my gp for CBT to see if that will help me counteract panic attacks when away from home and also if they can teach me relaxation techniques. I really feel that relaxation is the key to improving IBS symptoms and I NEVER relax. I always carry rescue remedy with me and I have just started taking Kalms to see if they help. As I am still learning about my IBS I can't give you much advice, other than what others tell me: you MUST learn to relax before anything else will work and I do believe that's true, but I also know it is very hard to relax with this condition as it is unpredictable.

I wish you tonnes of luck and please do let us all know if you discover any remedies that we haven't tried yet!!

By the way, snap with the new boyfriend, I have to take Immodium before going to his place, esp if he is cooking!!!! And yes I take them before I have any tummy upset!

I have had there symptoms for about 12 years. I have not had a normal poo for over a year. Every time it either a foul stinking sludg or the chicken soup described above, sometimes with undigested food. The pain is unbearable and there have been times when i have had to run out of my classroom to go to the loo. I went back to the doctor last week after my poo was swimming in blood. He suggested collitis or crohns.

Iworryalot · 27/07/2008 11:19

I get the same as you only i do get a few that resemble normal Bm a bit ,then i get hopes up thinking im better ,then the next time bad again , iv had investigations and blood tests done all normal buy i still worry alot ...

I've suffered for about 3 and a half years now. I ended up in hospital the first couple of times as they didn't know what ws causing the pain.

I now take aloe vera gel every day (or several times a day if I feel bloated). It really, really, really helps! I've gone from almost constant pain to flare-ups about every 6 months.

Interestingly, when I changed my diet and included more fruit and veg, it got much worse. It settled down again after a few months, but my body obviously needs a while to get used to changes.

Iworryalot · 27/07/2008 11:23

I find it so hard to know what to eat , i guess im looking for a quick fix and one or 2 days of diferent food wont make a differance that quick .chinese is the worst i find ,goes straight through me ..

Littlefish · 27/07/2008 12:53

Indian food for me, but I think it's the oil/fat, rather than the spices because I can cook spicy food at home and I'm fine.
