Hello

So been at nurse 3 weeks in row. Had leg infection for 2 weeks antibiotics not working and it's now worse. Smells. Pain so severe he cant walk so will be off work now! Nurse just dressing it and sending him away after asking gp to prescribe 2nd set of different antibiotics after 1st set that was supposed to be the right ones for that infection did absolutely nothing to help him.

What would you do ? We are worried, he can't get about its horrible. He had a venous ulcer but this was due to that part of the leg getting bumped and all of sudden this infection gets worse , he was hiding it from me !

Well, it pisses me off when people are naive enough to think that the NHS is infallible and that patients shouldn’t advocate for themselves. My DH died when I was 36 and our daughter was just 2 because we didn’t advocate for him loud enough. My friend’s DH survived because I had learnt my lesson and loudly insisted on him being seen, meaning they caught his sepsis in time.

I’m not suggesting OP or her DH be rude, or belligerent, or abusive. But with a wound like that, I absolutely would be expecting either IV antibiotics or, as I said, a very good explanation as to why they weren’t indicated.

I came on here to say this. It really is every man for himself. x

Oblomov24 · 08/09/2024 09:54

@olympicsrock asked if he was obese.

But I agree with @Doublesidedstickytape

"If this were an ulcer on the leg of someone geriatric with lots of comorbidities I could understand the replies of some of the nurses/medics on here.
But context is everything. If this is a non- geriatric in otherwise good health then surely all the alarm bells would be ringing?"

Agreed.

Photo in op doesn't look like obese, so why all posters who are nurses posting about obese Co morbidities?

UPDATE

dh went the 9am out of hours gp. They sending him hospital, talking about possible iv antibiotics!

Thanks to everyone that posted because this isn't such a shock news now. Poor dh.

Dr not happy with look and smell either.

I am so glad you have been taken seriously. We had a similar situation with my son (then 16) fobbed with our GP. Went to the out of hours walk in clinic as he started to feel hot and unwell , they were shocked and sent us straight to A&E (we weren’t even allowed to get a bag on the way home) Seen by a plastic surgeon and consultant and put in isolation for 5 days, Antibiotics via IV.
Once we got in the hospital system, it was good, just getting in was the problem. You really have to advocate for relatives these days
good luck and hope all goes well for you all x

Silviasilvertoes · 08/09/2024 09:59

Thank goodness he’s on his way to a&e, OP. My DH would resist all the way too, especially if he thought there would be a 12 hour wait. I had sepsis last year and it happened very quickly. Hopefully he’ll be given IV quickly and that will turn things around.

Cattyisbatty · 08/09/2024 10:00

Thank goodness he’s going to a&e - it’s a miserable wait but needs must. They may put him on a drip quickly - DD had a drip administered quickly last year for a potential infection while they processed bloods.

olympicsrock · 08/09/2024 10:02

Supperlite · 08/09/2024 09:21

That looks necrotic?! I’d be going to A&E straight away

No it doesn’t. Necrosis is dry black tissue.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 08/09/2024 10:02

Glad he went in. Clearly as he has already had an ulcer, his blood supply isn’t great. He needs IV antibiotics for sure. Plus Sean’s taking to identify what the infection actually is so that it can be targeted properly.

PortiasBiscuit · 08/09/2024 10:05

Not sure what A&E are for if it’s not that OP?

PortiasBiscuit · 08/09/2024 10:06

olympicsrock · 08/09/2024 10:02

You are mixing Necrosis with necrotic.. lots of nasty stages before the dry black bit.

111 clinicians have the ability to either access live video feed if given permission to do so or alternatively can provide links for pictures to be sent to.

This will not be the initial health advisors who do the first assessment, but if you are told 'a clinician will call you back', these will be people you speak to. They are usually registered nurses or paramedics and whilst 111 health advisors/call handlers do not have access to your medical notes, clinicians can ask for your permission to access them.

It's not as good as seeing the person in real life, but it's better than no visual information at all.

olympicsrock · 08/09/2024 09:32

I didn’t diagnose through the photo . What I said was that the ‘picture’ did not suggest infection / cellulitis.
You need a face to face clinical examination to diagnose severe infection.
I gave safety net advice to go to hospital if he was systemically unwell.

it was swabbed last week, it is infected and the antibiotic they thought would help that type did nothing an now his pain is so sever he cant walk on it. Out of hours dr has sent him straight to hospital now. Talking about Iv antibiotics, so I am glad it was mentioned on here so its not such a surprise to us if that's what they do. The leg has been infected for 2 weeks, they ignored it for 1 week before he was advised on antibiotics after the swab. Its gotten worse.

Are the photo's you posted from yesterday ?

Caaarrrl · 08/09/2024 10:19

He really needed to go to A and E last night. At least he's gone now.

Thistooshallpass24 · 08/09/2024 10:19

@NOTSUREWHATIMDOINHERE hopefully you've had some rest? So you can keep yourself and children going through the day. It's been a lot.
I do think people should read the whole thread or at least the op updates
Hope everything gets back to normal soon

sashh · 08/09/2024 10:22

He need to go to A and E.

My carer had an infected leg last year, the PA looked at it and said you need the Dr, the Dr came in and said she was sending him to hospital for inpatient treatment.

It's only because he said he needed to be around for me that they allowed him to be treated by the GP with strict instructions that if it didn't start to improve he would have to go in for IV antibiotics.

Mischance · 08/09/2024 10:23

Nurses clearly have their role. But a nurse who misses the seriousness of a lesion of this severity which SMELLS and is not responding to antibiotics is failing in his/her role.

I am glad this poor man is now heading for hospital and hopefully some appropriate treatment.

she also said 2 weeks ago it had heat in it... which I now see is a concern too!

Nope … necrosis is at the point of tissue death/ vs necrotic ( adjective) dead tissue .
