My ears just won't pop

Help! I am so fed up.
Both my ears went fuzzy a week or so ago and feel like the need to "pop".

I've had a wax check (completely clear) and the pharmacist has had a look and said no infection. Its likely a eustachian tube dysfunction and the pressure is unequal.

I've tried holding my nose and pushing air out of my ears, waggling ears, chewing gum and all sorts of things and it is still as bad.

Anyone got any ideas?

Jokey (but also partly serious) suggestion, jump on a plane? The pressure change might help push something out?

Good excuse for a holiday :)

smallsilvercloud · 05/09/2024 13:12

Otovent from the chemist it's a balloon you blow up through your nose! It can help clear the tube in your ear. I had to use it from when travelling on a plane made me deaf in one ear.

Have you got water retention at the moment?

I used to get terrible PMT ear problems. Too much coffee or diuretics used to help.

My daughters has been like this for 5 months. Seen 2 ent consultants and have said it'll solve it itself in time.

This may sound odd but silent reflex at all?

soupfiend · 05/09/2024 19:26

Reflux sorry

Well that was fascinating internet search! Thank you @smallsilvercloud. I shall tuck this knowledge away for when I might need it 😁

How does that affect ears?

Someone posted a while back, which opened my eyes, that their reflux was affecting their eustachian tubes and I think that applies to me, I notice my sinuses and ear fuzziness is worse when my acid is worse (I dont get heartburn which is why its referred to as silent reflux). Apparently its all connected around that area

In intersested in this balloon thing though, my ears have been worse than normal over the past few weeks and sinuses all playing up.

SILENT REFLUX SYMPTOMS
LPR can cause various symptoms, that can occur either by themselves or in combination. Some people have a sensation of a lump in their throat, others pain in their throat, (sometimes, but not always a burning type). If the vocal cords become inflamed, then it can cause a husky/hoarse voice. Irritation of the voice box or reflux going into the airway can cause an irritating cough. A common symptom is the sensation of mucus at the back of the nose or throat, which often causes people to continually clear their throat. In some cases, it can cause difficulty swallowing. The ears also drain into the back of the nose via the Eustachian tubes, so occasionally LPR can cause problems with blocked ears

Well Im on esomeprazole, twice a day and I dont know what 'controlled' is. Because its silent relfux, I dont get heartburn but I do get all the throat clearing and runny nose, but I also have chronic non allergic rhinitis and sinus problems

So for me, Im not sure if its controlled or not. So difficult to tell.

Beconase nose spray.

Helps reduce any swelling of tubes.

shewolfmum · 06/09/2024 23:52

Yep....I have it...my friend has it...my friends husband has it ...my kid had it. I think it is a virus thing at the moment? Right side of my head and ear and sooooooo blocked!

Starrrz · 31/08/2025 18:42

Starrrz · 31/08/2025 18:42

Starrrz · 31/08/2025 18:43

@NerdWhoEatsMedlar i had a baby 3 months ago and wondering is it linked to hormones? As this is my second period and seems to get worse?
