Blood pressure?

I’ve just been to the doctor and they said im fine. But the blood pressure monitor said 123/86. I googled it and the tool on the NHS website says this is high blood pressure? But the doctor said I’m fine?

It’s fine

Google or a trained Dr

Which do you think is right?

Where2GoNext · 04/09/2024 15:03

That's a normal BP. Maybe high normal but normal. Hypertension starts at >140/90, but I don't even think they medicated until over >150/100

Bellamari · 04/09/2024 15:09

The doctor didn’t say it was high. But I put the numbers in the NHS website and it says it’s high?

I wouldn't say it was high, but the diastolic number is on the higher side. Normal diastolic is usually 70-80. Above 80 is slightly raised, but it could be because you were at the GP getting it done, as it's quite common for BP to raise at the GP surgery. I put your BP reading into the NHS BP checker and it says slightly raised. Do you have a monitor at home where you can check when you are feeling more relaxed?

Well a trained GP ….obviously
its fine

Killerqueenie · 04/09/2024 15:13

Sorry, I must have missed the part where you said you put it on the BP checker website 😅

As a nurse, I would recommend testing at home if you can when more relaxed, and if it continues to be raised then I'd mention it to the GP. I think some pharmacies can also check for you if you don't have a monitor.

I wouldn't always say a GP is right. I'm a nurse and pick up on many, many things that are missed by doctors.

I myself was at the GP the other day and was told my heart rate was normal. It was sitting at 130, at rest. That would flag up as high on the NEWS chart.

Bellamari · 04/09/2024 15:19

I checked the NHS app and my blood pressure was the same back in June when I got checked over for a migraine. 117/85. So it’s been like that for a while. Top number ok but bottom number too high.

It’s the 86 that’s flagged it. Anything over 85 is considered raised now.
Home bp average should be 135/85. Slightly higher for a one off clinic reading.
Take 2 readings in the morning and 2 readings in the evening for 7 days and then average them. If it’s below 135/85 your are all good unless diabetic then it would be 135/75.

They haven’t flagged it. Thats the point.

Google got it wrong!! Trust your GP

AppropriateAdult · 04/09/2024 16:16

Honestly, that's so marginally raised that no GP in the world (I'm one!) is going to consider it as anything but normal. I wouldn't worry.

Thank you very much. I was confused because the NHS website classes it as high blood pressure but my GP hadn’t flagged it.

Take your BP every day twice a day over a week and see what the average is. Take it 3x in each case and record the lowest reading.

ThatsMyCheese · 04/09/2024 18:31

BP is usually a little bit higher in the GP's office compared to at home, maybe they take that into consideration?

Anotheremptynester · 01/01/2025 12:15

I wish my bp was that low. My bp is often 165 over 108 and yet my dr says my averages are ok. Its very confusing.
