Quick question: pain in thigh following blunt trauma but no bruising

I’m waiting for GP to open but wonder what this could be.

DD (12) started getting intense pain in the middle of her thigh at bed time. Enough to make her cry and she eventually got to sleep at 11pm. Woke in the night in pain and again this morning.

Only possible cause happened on Sunday so two days before the pain started. She was kicked on the thigh by her pony (struck with front hoof during bath). She cried at the time but was more in shock than it really hurting and she carried on with stable duties. She’s ridden since, been very active and was fine running about at school yesterday.

There is no bruising, heat or discolouration on the area but it’s the only cause I can think of.

Happy to pop to A & E if needed but in this case it would be very unlikely to be a fracture or break. Any experiences of similar?

@summerdress81 by a pony and was struck by front hoof so more playful while he was being bathed. No brushing at all which suggests it wasn’t hard but I wonder if it’s deep, could it not show.

Typically, GP will call between 10.30am-12.30pm for telephone consultation before deciding if a face to face is needed this afternoon. Not helpful but I don’t think we can justify A & E.

yes, this probably does justify ‘popping’ to A&E (It probably did when it happened). Broken bones aren’t the only thing that can happen with that sort of injury mechanism.

You can get infection in bones following injury with no visible signs. If the area feels warm to the touch or if your DD gets a temperature then it's straight to A&E. But actually even without that, pain severe enough to wake a child in the night warrants investigation anyway I think. I'd be happy with waiting to speak to the GP but it won't be at all surprising if they tell you to go to the hospital anyway as they may well feel that an x-ray is needed. The later in the day you get to the hospital the longer you'll wait.

MassiveOvaryaction · 04/09/2024 09:01

I'm not sure if it would show surface bruising as well, but you can get bruises on bones which would cause pain. GP will probably want an x ray to be sure.

Nevergoodenoughforthem · 04/09/2024 10:08

It didn’t justify checking at the time as it was over so quickly and not a second thought given. Believe me, we spend a lot of time at hospital for other health issues. I’m not one for ignoring any symptoms.

Still no call from GP…

It’s not warm, she’s not got a temperature and there is no bruising.

Has anyone had experience of this days after any trauma and it turn out to be a break or other?

How did it go?

Nevergoodenoughforthem · 04/09/2024 19:05

Nothing to report. GP called and then arranged a PM appointment (seems utterly ridiculous that it takes so long to get an appointment, especially for a child but that’s another story).

GP couldn’t see anything suspect. Just recommend pain relief and rest. No need for X-ray or any other investigation. So odd. She’s walking better on it now so will just keep an eye on it. 😮‍💨
