Knee sprain - cannot avoid walking, are crutches needed?

Wondering if anyone with experience or expertise can help please as 111 were not much use. DS is 17 and has sprained his knee. Over 48 hours since he did it, he’s rested, applied ice, elevated etc, taking ibuprofen 3x a day. It’s a tiny bit better but still painful and visibly swollen.

What I can’t get a handle on is - should he be resting it entirely - ie not walking other than trips to bathroom, and gentle pottering at home, or should he continue to go to school and limp around? Or do I try and get him some crutches?

He cannot walk normally, he can limp though it is painful. Clearly it’s not excruciating but it’s not great and he’s not putting his full weight through his leg / foot.

111 just say that if he can weight bear even if painful to keep treating at home. But that doesn’t help when he needs to go to school! They can’t say if what they really mean is he should rest it entirely / get crutches or if limping and putting some weight on it is ok. He wants to go to school and he doesn’t want to damage things further.

any help would be gratefully received!

Ideally someone would see it - but usually hobbling/limping around is ok

Strapping up may also be advisable - to stabilise and compress

Once you're past the 48hrs he needs to mobilise it.

He may need painkillers to help this.

You also need to give him a note for school/ring them so that he can maybe avoid standing waiting before class/leave a bit early so he can take his time to get to and from class.

Ah thank you, that’s reassuring.
