Root canal advice

Hi, had a root canal done near on 3 weeks ago and its still hurting. Been back to dentist and all ok xray done after it etc. 2x antibiotics so no infection . Everywhere I look it says a few days pain will be gone. It's not excruciating but it's not great. I suppose my question is. Has anyone had this drag on a bit and does it eventually go? Starting to lose hope. Thanks

What kind of pain are you experiencing? Some tenderness and sensitivity to percussion/hot cold is normal for a week or so whilst things settle down, normally the ligaments and tissues around the tooth are what cause the pain due to the invasiveness of the treatment.

To have pain three weeks on however is unusual.

You'll have some moron come along and tell you to have it out soon but I would advise you not to listen to them. A properly treated root canal tooth can last 10+ years, sometimes a life time. Much cheaper and conservative than needing an implant down the line, or risking damage to neighbouring teeth/drifting of your bite/TMJ etc.

If the tooth is sensitive to bite on ask your dentist to double check your bite and ensure the restoration applied afterwards is not sitting high, did you have it crowned?

Are you sure the pain is not coming from another tooth?

Thanks. Unfortunately it's the tooth next to my front teeth so definitely don't want it out. No crown. As thinner tooth than say a molar.
Just toothache, no sensitivity but if I hit my teeth together it's a bit jolty. Just general toothache. But its starting to get me down. Some days are better than others.
He said to go back if it continues, but I don't want it out so what else can I do. And I'm failing to see what else he can do.

I've had teeth that are sensitive for years before they settle down.

I kid you not. Years.

I always end up getting the root treated twice. I have curved roots apparently which doesn't help.

So if it were my tooth I'd expect another six months at least of discomfort. I would be back if it's actual pain though to get it redone.

What you describe suggests the restoration may be too high if you get a zing when you bite together.

It doesn't sound right at all. I also had a root canal done about three weeks ago. It sounds like it's the same tooth or thereabouts. I was getting loads of pain after a filling in it that was too high. So the dentist did a root canal and I haven't had a peep out of it since.

I'm no dentist but I'm guessing that there's still a root in there bothering you. I was having the exact same problem as you with the original filling - not hurting all the time, but I was getting zaps of pain from it when anything happened to push it against the pulp. It was also giving me sinus headaches sometimes.

Did you have a temporary filling in it for now?

Pixie1771 · 03/09/2024 20:37

Thanks but no i had nothing in it before. I kept getting infections because the root was dead. That's why the root canal was done. I think I will have to go back though if it carries on.

Yes, definitely go back. I waited months for my original filling to settle down and I wish I'd kicked up a fuss immediately.

Something obviously isn't right there.

Buts it been looked at since and they said all was good.
I'm actually stressed about it, constant pain drags you down. Today has been worse than the previous few .

Is it sitting too high? ie when you look at your bite in the mirror is it touching the tooth above or below it when the other teeth aren't yet touching?

It maybe needs a bit ground down so it's not sitting proud?

Pixie1771 · 03/09/2024 21:56

No it's a very thin tooth so they go theough the back of it. It doesn't meet my other teeth as my upper teeth are over the bottom. They don't meet. And even if they did it wouldn't matter as root canal eas done through the back further up
