Heavy period ?

I know there was a thread on this yesterday but I cannot find it so was wondering if anyone could help?
Although my periods are very regular ie no spotting etc I use night-time towels and super tampons together but have to change them every hour as the blood floods everywhere.
I've never asked anyone about how much bleeding is 'normal' but is this much bleeding a bit heavy? It goes on like this for four days then stops but I feel terribly tired all the time.
Is there an alternative to iron tablets and is it still possible to have a D&C nowadays? (They used to perform this as standard about 20 years ago after childbirth)
Sorry to ask so many questions but I don't want to go the GP if it is irrelevant.

the alternative to iron tablets is spatone which i take

yes that is heavy

you wouldnt be wasting your gps time

i dont know if they do d and c these days i had one about 20 years ago

it didnt change anything tbh

some people find some hormones help but i dont take them because contr indicated because of my mental health

Thanks zippi. I wondered if it 'was just my age' (47) and that I gave birth not long ago.
GP gave me progesterone but it did not work at all.

is it recent

if so could be age related

i am 50 but have heavy poeriods for ever but cretainly the last 25 years

i have endometriosis

i take evening primrose which is what the gynaecologust recommeneded all those years ago

im sure they can do something about it

i am just not keen on medical intervention

especially not taking medication/hormones

not worth it in my case

it is horrendous having bad periods really debilitating

zippitippitoes · 18/04/2008 12:26

deffo see your gp as well if you gave birth recently

your hormones are probably messed up

GentleOtter · 18/04/2008 13:24

Thanks zippi I just put it down to one of those things that happens but some days it is hard to stay awake and I have to avoid driving. I will try the Spatone to see if it boosts me up a bit.

GentleOtter - I went to the Doctor's with a similar problem only the other day. I'm in my early 40s, and have a 19mth old son. Her recommendation was to have the Mirena Coil fitted.

zippitippitoes · 18/04/2008 13:31

apparently that does work for some people it depends if you get on with the hormones some people do and some dont

if you have no reason to think you might not be suited to hormones then it could be worht a try

i wouldnt myself because it would be too risky

cocolepew · 18/04/2008 13:33

I have this problem. It has been recommended I get a proceedure where a balloon is inserted, and then het up. This burns away the lining of the womb and stops, or at least drastically reduce, your periods

I also have very heavy periods - for 2 days a month I can't go on a big day out etc as need to be at a toilet every hour! Feel very tired for a week after my period. I take ferrous gluconate tablets, which I find do not cause constipation like ferrous sulphate. I don't think they do D and C any more for periods. I was advised by my Dr to have mirena coil, but I am worried about PMT/depression side effects. The Dr said that it does not cause these type of side effects, but I have heard otherwise.

Does anyone have any other tips?

needahand · 18/04/2008 14:22

Gentleotter. I have something similar and it is not stricly normal it is called (can't remember now) hypermetriosis or endemetriosis. You can either take the pill to reduce the bload flow or some big chunky yellow tablets (can't remember the name of these either but your doctor would know).

SubRosa · 18/04/2008 18:10

It can sometimes be caused by hormone and/or endocrine imbalance. It may be worth asking your GP for a referral, just to check you don't have fibroids, endometriosis or one of the many other things we have to suffer

DettaJnr · 18/04/2008 18:48

I have the same problem. I find using a Mooncup gives you a little longer between changes.

I saw a gynaecologist this week. The heavy bleeding can be caused by fibroids and polyps also. I will be going in to have a hysteroscopy which is done under GA. He said that he will do a D&C and is going to insert a Mirena coil. He said that it will take 3 months for the coil to 'settle in'. HTH
