CELLULITIS - ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING A BOUT IT?

On Monday my dad complained of being cols, so we sent him to bed. He stayed there all yesterday and today with mum looking after him. Tonight he complained that his left leg was sore, when mum looked at it, it was swollen, red and inflamed. As the surgery was closed she called the out of hours number, after getting all the details they said that she should take him round to the hospital tonight.

They have just got home. He has been told it is cellulitis given a prescription for the problem, but they also told him that if he had not gone in tonight we would have ended up in hospital on a drip.

It is really scary to think that my dad was that seriously ill and we did not notice.

Can anyone tell me anymore about this disease?

THanks everyone.

The nurse said that she would prefer the doc to look at his leg so mum called the surgery.

The doc looked at the notes and told her that he would prefer dad to go into hospital, as his foot has now swollen he is finding it difficult to walk so mum asked the doc to send an ambulance. That took at least 3 hours to turn up.
He is now in hospital on IV drugs.

I have not spoken to mum today, but I will keeep you all updated when I can next get to the library.

RTKangaMummy · 11/01/2005 11:59

MB I am glad that they are giving him the IV antibiotics they should help him

Hopefully he will not be there very long.

It is a shame that he has to go into hospital but hopefully once the drugs start to work it will help him.

Good luck to your dad

Please send him and your mum best wishes

Sorry to hear your dad is in hospital but it does sound like it's the best place fom him to be atm. Hope he gets well soon.

Hi there.

I spoke to mum last night. Dad will be in hospital for about a week. They have also discovered that he has diabetes which will have to be controlled by drugs.

BTW he was 60 last May

It doesn't surprise me that he'll be in for a week mb, it was 11 days before I left hospital after my c section, most of that spent on IV antibiotics.

However, he's obviously in the right place, getting the right treatment and hopefully the hospital will be be able to also monitor and get the diabetes under control.

RTKangaMummy · 13/01/2005 10:12

sory I missed your post yesterday MB

it is good they have discovered his diabetes as he will get treated for that too.

Hopefully the IV antibiotics are working.

hope he continues to get better

send him my wishes and to your mum and all your family

MadameButterfly · 13/01/2005 13:12

Hi all,
Thanks for your good wishes.

Mum says that they are now not sure about the diabetes, apparently some more results came back negative, so i am not sure what is happening about that.

She also said that the IV seems to be working and his leg is not as swollen.

thanks again

Hi there,

Thanks for asking Kanga.

He does not have diabetes but will need to watch the amount of sugar he eats in future.

Hopefully he will be out at the weekend. My mum is getting rather lonely being at home by herself.

MadameButterfly · 24/01/2005 10:50

RTKangaMummy · 24/01/2005 10:54

That is brill

Glad he will have the nurse coming round

If it is weeping ask them for one of the disposable mat things so he can rest his leg up without messing up the stool.

Also get your mum to put a extra mat/towel under where his legs will be in the bed.

Brill news am really chuffed for him and your mum

RTKangaMummy · 24/01/2005 10:55

If his foot is still swollen get a special velcro shoe/sandal that will go over bandage

My dad still has one as his shoes wont go over bandage

MadameButterfly · 24/01/2005 10:57

Thanks Kanga

OP posts:
suedonim · 24/01/2005 11:24

That's been a long haul for your dad, MB, I bet he'll be so glad to get home.

Kanga, where do you get those velcro shoes from?

RTKangaMummy · 24/01/2005 11:28

He got them from the chemist

but he has had to wear them for over a year and so is on to 2nd pair or may even be 3rd.

as his feet are size 12/13

it is a bit small for him so not brill fit but he cant wear anything else.

suedonim · 24/01/2005 12:25

Thanks for the info! Ikwym about the size. My ds2 has size 12/13 feet and it's a nightmare for him to get any shoes but esp trainers.
