Nosebleeds

I know this is hardly a problem, but I am 70 and have never had nosebleeds that I can remember - even as a child. In the last few months I have had 2 - not severe, they stopped fairly quickly, but it's so unusual.

Obviously 2 nosebleeds over a period of months is hardly frequent, so I haven't been to the GP - hard enough to get an appointment anyway - but is this a sign of any underlying condition for someone my age? I have googled, and it does suggest several things (including heart conditions) but only suggests going to the doctor if they are frequent or difficult to stop. I wondered if anyone here knew anything or had experience of this in older people.

The only time I’ve ever had one was when I was pregnant and got head butted by my toddler. I assumed it was due to more blood flow and a change in blood pressure. I’d definitely the GP for a general check up or maybe a pharmacist?

High Blood pressure?

Mumdiva99 · 31/08/2024 19:20

They can be relayed to allergies (hayfever), dry nose, high blood pressure. It can be that once you have a weak spot in the nose it will keep bleeding there until it heals up.

Thanks everyone. I think the weak spot in the nose is a good call, but I haven't had my blood pressure checked for a while.

Dh had a spell of nosebleeds which took a full clean of the bathroom each time since he seemed to manage to spray everywhere, and would last just to the point where I'd be thinking "Right, A&E this time" and then peter out.

It went on for about 3 or 4 days with me gently suggesting nagging about seeing someone, and then stopped.

He did get his bp checked and it was fine. They reckoned it was just one of those things.

About a week afterwards a big clot came out of his nose but no more bleeding.

No recurrance in the last 12 months.

Thanks @smallchange - how old is your DH please?
Edit: Just to add, his nosebleeds sound a lot worse than mine was. Glad they've stopped now.

He's early 50s. Yes, they were pretty grim!

My family member had frequent nosebleeds at around 60. It was investigated by their GP, no sinister cause was found but they had a weak vessel or something in their nose which they were prescribed a cream for which solved it in just a few weeks. I’d visit a GP if they continue.

Are you on low-dose aspirin or any other blood thinners?

Have you been in an aeroplane recently? One of my adult DC gets them after every holiday
