Hand hold while I wait for ambulance

My DD (age 20 - learning disability, autism and mental health problems) hasn't passed urine in 24 hours. I have spoken to 111 and they are sending an ambulance out.

I have agoraphobia and anxiety myself so I am absolutely terrified about going to the hospital with DD. I will of course go with her but it's so incredibly difficult. I'm on the verge of tears.

I just hope she's ok and it's nothing to do with her kidneys.

You can do this and you are amazing for recognising your DD needs help, and then going ahead and getting her it despite the challenges.

Calling an ambulance was absolutely the right thing to do but if you are in a position to get a taxi to A&E with her, can you do that? It’s totally fine if not, but a taxi will likely have a shorter wait to arrive. I wonder if the uncertainty of how long the ambulance will take to arrive is contributing to your completely understandable anxiety and the reality is that arriving in an ambulance won’t get her seen any quicker. Nonetheless, if a taxi isn’t an option an ambulance is completely appropriate and will get her where she needs to be, so don’t stress if it’s not an option.

You’ve done an amazing job advocating for your daughter tonight, I’m sure she is very grateful to have such a lovely mam.

Yep think practically. Focus on packing for yourself and DD. Money, book, charger, fleece top or blanket, pjs, nibbles, sandwich, drinks, socks, pants, anything that will entertain your DD, taxi phone number.

This is a great post - practical thinking can be such a help when you're feeling anxious.

Just to add medication to that list - if she's on regular medication it's a lot easier if they don't have to represcribe from scratch and if you're on any you'll need it if it's a long wait.

How are you doing now OP ?

Hi everyone

Paramedics have been out along with a specialised paramedic as DD refused to leave the house due to her mental health problems. The paramedics were absolutely fantastic and said the last thing they want to do is take her out forcibly considering it's not a life or death situation.

The plan is to action the GP first thing and get them to prescribe some Lorazepam and hopefully do urgent blood tests in the community and rush it up to the hospital. She has a raised temperature of 38.2 so there are infection markers present. She's had paracetamol and I've tucked her up in bed.

Will be on the phone to the GP first thing but the paramedics have also sent the GP an action explaining everything.

Thank you all for your wonderful support. I will keep you updated.

Thinking of you this morning, hope and hope your night wasn’t too bad

Enko · 30/08/2024 06:43

Hope you get this sorted today.

cunoyerjudowel · 30/08/2024 07:04

Glad she is ok, and it's sorted. However, this is an opportunity to address the issue should the situation arise again.

Could you get some support councilling for your anxiety? Also why could your dh not step up and take her? Can this be addressed

Has she passed urine now? Is she drinking plenty of fluids?

I am really worried that she may have a severe infection . I’m a doctor by the way so not one to jump up and down.
See how she is this morning . If she is agitated or confused or has a fast pulse rate or is breathing quickly or not passing much urine she needs to be in hospital .

Baneofmyexistence · 30/08/2024 07:23

Hope you are all ok this morning. I have a DD with a learning disability and language disorder and it is so hard when they are poorly and can’t let you know exactly what’s wrong. Sending love and wishes for a speedy recovery x

She's not yet passed any urine. I've contacted the GP to see if we can get some Lorazepam to enable us to get her to hospital. I'll be chasing them up if I don't hear anything within the next hour or so. I'm about to take her to the toilet to see if she will have a wee on there.

Sorry I meant to say that she hasn't had a drink since yesterday morning so she will be getting dehydrated too. She really needs to be in hospital, I just need the sedation for her.

That's really good news OP.
If she's not keen in drinking, would she eat ice-lollies?

Enko · 30/08/2024 13:14

Good news

This wonderfully supportive thread reminded me of an advert that I love at the moment. It's a new mum who is confiding to a group of women with babies in her kitchen how hard everything is. They each give her supportive advice and it's only at the end that it's obviously a text support group, so a phone company advert. It gives me the same warm feeling that this thread did - lovely
